I am working on my 05 TJ 4.0l to replace oil pan gasket and maybe RMS to take care of small oil drip. I followed various instructions from this forum and YouTube. I removed both skid plates. Unbolted flange from straight pipe to catalytic converter. Unbolted 2 pre-cats from intake manifold. Disconnected 2 oxygen sensors for down pipes. Lowered everything down on the floor and out of the way of oil pan.
I also removed the starter since it is only 2 bolts. Everything came out OK since the Jeep has no rust. I drained the oil and I was able to remove the oil pan nice and easy.
It was coated with old sludge and grime in some places. I gave it a decent cleaning. I didn't even notice that one side of oil pan has bunch of wrinkles? Bottom is fine and oil pan sits pretty flat where the gasket fits. It's a Mopar pan based on the stamped numbers.
Should I reuse this pan or get new pan. It's weird how there is no damage on bottom but side is wrinkled and paint is nice and shiny no flaking.

I was doing some research and found add for new Mopar pan and it shows similar wrinkles like mine.

Launch your Jeep at the beach, cave in the oil pan, drop it in a gravel parking lot...beat out the dents and drive five hours home.

And I haven't touched it since...made it to the Rubicon and back.

Those pans are a lot tougher than you think.

I ended up replacing the oil pan gasket using Felpro. My was gray color instead of the blue usually shown in photos. Bought at AutoZone. I decided not to do the RMS since I didn't see any evidence of oil splatter on the flywheel. I felt the previous gasket which was also a Felpro was not installed with enough silicon in 4 corners as per the instructions. I figured whoever replaced the gasket did the RMS at that time. So after few days since I replaced the gasket I have no oil leak anymore. I got lucky I guess.

Run it if the mating surface is flat. 🙂
