Rock Sliders / Rocker Guards Guide

I figured I would add in my own research and updates:

JCR no longer makes sliders for the TJ, this is a shame as I really liked the design and the "wedge" step. In there replacement I was able to find the following (@JMT feel free to steal these for updates):

Outta Hand Fab. "Insanity" sliders look a lot like the old JCR's - but are made out of 3/16" bent plate with a 3" step. they seem to mount to the torque boxes so not great for the hardcore guys, but should stand up to a few trees.

Marked Designs "Stage 2 sliders" These also have a wedge step similar to the JCR's - slightly smaller at 2.5"ish they mount to the body side and to the torque box, should be sufficient for moderate wheeling but also not going to save you from crazy rocks. you can see more on there Install Video coming in just shy of $300 for a set - these are incredibly tempting.

I am thinking about a set of Marked Design for moderate trail use - mostly to keep the downed trees im crawling over from denting the tub - not doing crazy rocks this far south. Anyone have any experience with them?

All the good ones also have nutserts in the torque boxes even for the harder wheelers, or are you saying they sandwich in the body mounts?

My issue with these is their claim that they're mini boat sides that don't require any of that related work - I think that step might trick some but they do not appear to actually be mini boat sides.

Deffinely not boats - the Marked Designs use nut-zerts into the torque boxes, or they actually supply some self tapping bolts that go into the torque box but you could replace it with a nutzert

I was under the impression the Savvys and many of the hardcore ones provided more body mount protection - these provide effectively none.

Oh wow, yeah that change would be a must for sure!

Arguably I have less protection on mine because they're real mini boatsides. But I did also raise by body mounts, so netted an overall protection improvement.

Im not sure if its said but i read somewhere that the arb deluxe rock sliders have been beefed up from the sliders from past. I do not know if this is true or not but i have a set on the way.

What does beefed up specifically mean?

Please excuse my podunk Mississippi edgemacation. Im ass uming there are thicker or better material dont really know to tell the truth, just something i read some place.

Read the slider thread linked above. There are multiple design criteria that will inform the effectiveness of a slider for the purposes desired of them.

I did and saw a previous set of the arb sliders in 2021 that failed but i believe they have been updated was all I was saying

Measure the steel thickness and see what it is. Also note if they updated to ww2ww or not. I think the DOM step often catches on a rock behind the front ww and pulls the slider away from the tub distorting the slider and sometimes the tub.

If they are what is currently showing on their website, the don't look any different. I could have made you a good deal on a "lightly" used set.

I would put them ahead of a lot of other options, but they won't hold up to abuse like the Savvy set. Once you slip off a line and drop the rig on the slider, that tube will be a problem. It puts too much leverage on the backer. The first 12 years I had them they held up ok, the last 2 years not soo much.

Plenty of people get by with less than optimal slider designs. If you're really using them, there are only a few viable options and the ARB aren't one of them.

The ARB slider appears to suffer from the common design flaw of using the body mounts as an attachment point.

They don't use the body mounts as an attachment point. They rivet to the torque boxes.

Having just re-installed my sliders, I thought the hole you circled didn't look like a body mount location, so I looked for an installation video out of curiosity. Screen shot:

It doesn't use the body mounts.

Good. Are the attachments into the torque box rivets or rivnuts? The holes do not look big enough for a bolt. But we know how to fix that.

They are rivets, and not nearly enough of them. Lots more rivets, or larger diameter fasteners are in order.
