I purchased the Jeep with a RIPP coil pack already installed. Its been running well except for the fact the bracket broke and dropped the pack into engine bay. Something must have shorted out because I am not running rough. This system alters original wiring and firing order. Would you replace with same or convert back to an OEM style. How difficult would it be to convert the wiring back if that is the best way to go?

It's a known flaw. The bracket is literally just a piece of sheet metal and the vibration fatigues the metal until it just breaks.

Supposedly RIPP has a replacement bracket available. I used a piece of aluminum bar stock to brace the original bracket myself

There's now way a coil can alter firing order...

The dummies at RIPP post this at the very bottom of the listing, because we all know people read the directions......right?

RIPP replied to a customer review having the same confusion with this:

"Hi Christian, your right, the coil comes from our 3.8 V6 kit and therefore the firing order is for that engine. We are retrofitting that to the 4.0 and that's where the confusion lies. There should have been an instruction pack showing the correct firing order and it sounds like you may have missed it or it was missing, that would have made this clear. Sorry about the confusion and thanks for sharing"

@tx-skydiver , I think your firing order may be fucked up. If you're going to stick with this system, double check. Personally, I recommend you ditch that junk and find an OEM rail.

Yep...and they want $100 for that new bracket. Not gonna happen.

I agree. time to look for OEM (which I prefer anyway).

Or just correct the firing order as Obi-wan stated. It sounds like you may be wired according to the markings on the coil, as opposed to the proper stock firing order, which would definitely cause it to run rough.

Great assessment, Obi.

Thanks. Good info for sure..but it is wired right. Ran like a dream until the bracket broke and it bounced around the engine bay.

Just reacting to your comment in your original post stating that the firing order is altered. It is not.

I can't picture it because I've never seen it, but how tough would it be to fab up a new bracket?

In regards to firing order, I was just going off what was printed on the unit and what I saw on website. I didn't double check it (should have).

I could easily fab up a bracket but since its now running rough I think the coil is damaged. I'm ordering an OEM style unit (Blue Streak) and getting rid of this one...or holding as a spare.

Almost 3 years ago I purchased the Viper coil kit with RIPP spark plug wires for a test and I would report back to members on the forum.
Upon receiving the kit; the first problem was pig tail connector wiring between the coil and the OEM harness connector was wired incorrectly.
I contacted the seller advising him of the pigtail wiring problem and what was required to correct the problem.
The seller instructed me to disassemble the pig tail connector and correct the connector wiring; apparently this was a known production problem.
After a month the engine developed a rough idle with misfires caused by a couple RIPP spark plug wire clips coming loose inside the spark plug boot.
Several times I removed the spark plug boots, cut and removed some spark plug wire insulation and crimped the clips to the spark plug wires.
After three months and more problems I removed the Viper kit and returned the ignition back to stock "OEM".
Three months of testing the kit were disappointing with NO increase in performance or gas mileage.
I reported the spark plug wire problems to the seller who instructed me to contact the spark plug wire vendor.
The vendor stated a new set would be shipped in a couple days, but 3 weeks later the new set of wires were still sitting in their shipping department.
After many emails and phone calls to the vendor they stated there was a problem sourcing materials and were not sure when the replacement order would be filled; the replacements spark plug wires were placed on indefinite back order.
After 2 years of contacting the vendor; I have given up hope of ever receiving a replacement set of RIPP spark plug wires.
So for those of you that are considering the purchase of the Viper kit and RIPP wires; DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY......

I'll add my 2 cents on the "Viper" coil conversion. I didn't know RIPP made one.
I used the K Suspension conversion bracket and extension cable on my XJ. On the XJ the engine bay seems busier and moving the coil bar around to change plugs was a PITA. Not to mention the possible damage to the wiring harness while doing so. I ordered the bracket kit, and a 3.3L minivan coil and wires from Rock Auto. Ran great and made changing plugs much easier.

I just did the same thing with my TJ. K Suspension bracket, Blue Streak coil for a 3.8L JK and wires for a earlier TJ.

The K Suspension bracket is stout and supported top and bottom. I have no worries about the coil going anywhere.

It appears that your bracket is a 2-piece system. Mine was only one place with fasteners at the bottom only and all of that weight on top. Maybe the previous owner that installed it didn't use all of the parts that came with it.

That's not surprising. Unless there was a problem with the factory ignition system, a different coil and wires are not going to make the engine more efficient.

My understanding is their early brackets didn't have the upper support. They later updated them.

ETA: I wasn't looking for or expecting more power in either my XJ or this TJ. Just wanted to make life easier when I changed plugs.
