So I believe the input shaft bearing is going out on my '99 SE (AX5 trans, 241K miles). When I start moving there is a growling sound. It isn't the throwout bearing.

When I park, put the transfer case in neutral and go through the gears, the growling gets louder the higher the gear it is in. I'm wondering how to fix it. I've never rebuilt a transmission, and have no access (that I know of) to a press. Are there any reputable transmission builders that you would trust, to get a rebuilt AX5 transmission from, or are there better options you can tell me about? I'm located in Utah if it helps.

I found out the trans has Mobil 1 10W30 in it. Is it worth trying Redline MT90 to quiet down the trans? I know it won't 'heal' a worn trans, just wondering if it will extend useful life.

The sound you're describing and the fact that it goes away in 4wd points to your transfer case not shifting into the detents properly when the chain is not engaged with the front drive shaft. Check the linkage and the shift arm on the transfer case to make sure something didn't come loose. If you don't find anything it maybe an internal problem.
