replaced my TPS, disconnected battery to reset all. Ran great. super tight and smooth. Then wont start. and rapid clicking when turning ignition. Drained battery? if so, why?

The rapid clicking when you turn the ignition typically indicates that your battery is low on charge, so it could very well be drained. Here are a few things to check:
  • Check the battery's voltage. A good battery should read around 12.6 volts when fully charged. If it's below 12 volts, it may need a charge or replacement.
  • Make sure that the battery terminals are clean and tight. Corrosion can impede proper electrical flow, and loose connections can cause starting issues.
  • If something was left on (like interior lights or accessories) when you disconnected the battery, it could have drained the battery.
  • If your battery is consistently draining, it might be worth checking the alternator as well. If it’s not functioning properly, the battery won’t charge while the engine is running.

much mahalos. Will check battery first. Thanks Chris

What happens if you put the original TPS back on?

really really bad idling and stalls out. Throttle much stronger with new one. I disconnected battery to reset sensors. then it ran awesome. I mean awesome, then really bad idling, then stalled. Then started up and awesome again. A day of riding great then idle dropped while driving 15mph. and almost stalled. Then did stall. multiple cranks to start, kept on the gas to get her home. Im thinking of taking apart the throttle body and IAC to clean them , but im horrible with putting it back. I have bad luck with gaskets

Chris, I got a jump from AAA. Checked battery and its at 35%. probably gonna get a new battery but wanna see if i can recharge this one. update: after jump it ran awesome. really awesome, then really bad idling, then stalled. Then started up and awesome again. a few hours of riding great then idle dropped while driving 15mph. and almost stalled. Then it did stall. It took multiple cranks to start, kept on the gas to get her home. what gives?

Test your alternator. Sounds to me like you might have a failing alternator.

will do. Im thinking of taking apart the throttle body and IAC to clean them , but im horrible with putting it back. I have bad luck with gaskets. Im learning on this jeep. I didnt think I was very handy but so far Im seeing some success. Ill youtube testing an alternator. Thanks Chris. Much appreciated.

That would be a good idea for preventative maintenance!

Chris, if I can bother you with another question, (mprobably and stupid question) -does this have anything to do with how much gas is in the tank? Im not in the red, but Ive noticed, super slight loss of power when Im near red. Then as soon as shes full, tons of power.

The TJ fuel gauge is notoriously inaccurate. However, of al the TJ's I've owned I've found that when it's down to about 1/4 tank usually that means you've got more than a quarter left. In other words, the fuel gauge tends to underreport.

I think your problem is related to the charging system personally. I had an alternator go bad on our minivan and the symptoms were the same for the most part. It started cutting out, losing power, and then eventually the battery light came on on the dash. Testing the alternator is where I'd start. It's very simple to do. If the alternator isn't charging the battery then that could also be why your battery keeps running low.

The fuel think seems coincidental if I'm being honest.

it's worth validating your fuel pressure though. Should be about 49psi once primed.

Hey Chris, hope all is well. sorry to bother but wanted to get your opinion. I checked the battery, its at 12.37. Check alternator and it reads 14.37 (ive seen online it should read around 14.30-14.50) so im guessing its not the alternator? what do you think? just trying to avoid taking it to the shop, but its starting to look like I might have to

Go to the auto parts store and have them check the battery and alternator. They will do it for free.

But it sounds like a bad battery, it should be 12.6 V fully charged.

newbie here, I posted about a rough idle after TPS replacement. I disconnected my battery to reset the eco. I hear it will run rough idle, but damn, this is nuts. idle is all over the place. Good battery, tested alternator and it's fine. turns on and runs great for a bit then the idle drops. Then sometimes it stalls. I hear the eco needs to re-learn the new TPS, but really, how long does it need to “re learn”?

got attested. even got my own multimeter. battery is at 12.6. alternator is at 14.5. Drove it again and she starts up fine. drives fine for a bit then idle drops really low. gave some gas and she’ll run, but idle keeps dipping
