Removing spare tire mount

I need to remove the factory stair tire mount to deal with some rust, so I don’t get frustrated and just start cutting wires, is there a trick to getting the brake light wire pulled through?

On the inside of the tailgate, take the plastic cover off of the bracket that encloses the electrical contacts. Once you do that, you can disconnect the wires from the contacts. At that point the wire should all come out.

I looked at that wasn’t sure if those would just unplug or not thanks.

How bad is the rust?

The rust isn’t bad just some surface rust on the mount itself, nothing some sand paper and a rattle can can’t fix.
