Rear Main Seal Replacement (4.0)

I had a 2007 Chevy Equinox that gave me a lot of problems with radiator hoses, electro fans and the entire cooling system, with it I learned some mechanics but I think this is something more serious and I have seen a lot of information here but I still think that I need some more practice, for now I'll start with the fan clutch and change the entire cooling system. This is a 2003 Sahara with 130k miles and it seems to have some pretty old hoses. But I'm happy to find this forum, it has a lot of information.

You might be right. If you haven't done much jeep repair take it to a reputable repair shop with jeep experience. Inspecting all hoses is great idea. And, change all the fluids.

Hey, I have an 05 jeep tj se with the 2.4 6speed and I need to replace my rear main seal. I was wondering if the linked rms for the 4.0 would fit in mine and what about the oil pan gasket aswell.

Both will be different. The rear main seal on your 2.4L is also a one-piece seal instead of the split type used in the 4.0L. I believe replacement with one-piece types involves dropping the transmission. You can consult the Factory Service Manual pdf in the Resources section of the forum for detailed instructions on replacement.

The pictures at #11 are confusing. The seal goes in the groove farthest from the bearing. Don't know why it is shown in the wrong groove.

Also if it hasn't already been mentioned, there are the seal kits where the two halves are identical.. just like a circle cut in half.

Then there are the kits as shown here.. the bottom half has 'ears'.

The design changed somewhere along the production run. The difference you note in seal design is year-model dependent.

Fel Pro actually builds the seals they sell. Mopar buys them from a vendor. I try to buy from a builder that also sells to OEM. Get the same quality without paying the Mopar tax.

I’m a fan of many Fel-Pro gaskets and seals, but there are plenty of posts sharing that the Fel-Pro RMS leaked and the leak stopped after a Mopar was installed. The seals also looked different when I viewed them.

I chose not to chance it and have been good for almost two years with the Mopar.
