Hey y'all. Got a quick question. Apparently as I'm working on the rear differential, I noticed as I struggle to put the spider gears back in that I have a trac lok. Can I buy a regular carrier and gears that come with it and change it out to eliminate the Trac Lok due to it being so difficult to work on for future reference. This is referring to a Dana 35 on my 99 TJ Sahara 4.0 a/t

Yes, but why? That would require at a minium a new carrier and setting the gears up again. If you're paying someone for that, it will be expensive, and you would be the first person that I've heard of willingly going from LSD to open diff.

What issue(s) are you trying to solve here? Are you trying to rebuild the carrier or just replace the spider gears?

The issue started with a leaking axle seal. Then noticed the axle shaft has a deep groove from the bearing so changed the axle shaft and seal and bearing. Putting the spider gears back in as the videos show online isn't going as easy as they show.

Be more specific about what you are having trouble with.the spiders won't go in? The cross pin? New axles machined wrong?

Make sure the parts going back in are compatible with a trac lok.

Just the spider gears. The planetary gears that they sit with don't move as freely like all the videos show. I copy the videos to the T and nothing. Just trying to see if installing the spider gears if there is a different approach due to it being Trac Lok.

We can't read your mind. Are they new? Old? You have trouble rolling both spiders in so the cross pin can slip in?

Detail exactly what you are doing and what you are doing it with

They are old ones. No visible marks or pitting so I'm trying to reuse them. Having trouble rolling both in place. They came out easy enough. Putting them back in is giving me a headache and a half. Just trying to put everything back together again.

Gotcha, you'll get it.can you put one in place and slip the cross pin in enough to hold it? Then you can spin a side gear and concentrate on the remaining spider.

Unfortunately they have to move together due to the teeth keeping them in place. There's even a chance for them to be off a tooth when doing it. The issue is the thrust washer for them do not want to cooperate and the planetary gears don't want to move freely when attempting. They spin when the spider gears aren't in the way.
