Ok I'm bouncing back and fourth here I want to run 33's for now but out of curiosity how would it be as performance wise to put 35's or 36's on a 2.5L 5spd with 4.88 what would my RPM range be with 35's be with 4.88 on flat south tx land

Stick with 33's and you need to go for 4.88 with your 2.5L engine and 5-speed transmission combination. That's the ideal ratio for your Jeep running 33's.

Your 2.5L engine means your rear axle is a Dana 35 which definitely (!) is not strong enough for 35" tires. 33's are the absolute upper limit. Not to mention your 2.5L couldn't turn 35's very well since the lowest gear ratio you can install into the Dana 35 is 4.88 and that ratio is only suitable for 35's with the 4.0L engine.

The biggest problem with 35's on a Dana 35 is what you'll see here... http://www.billhughes.com/dana35c/. And not all of those are even 35" tires... lockers and getting too aggressive on the trail can break the Dana 35 with even smaller tires if you don't respect its limitations. But for most people, the Dana 35 holds up with 33's so long as you don't also install a locker and don't get crazy with it. :)

My helper runs 5.13's with a Super 35 kit on his TJ with 35's. He followed us all over JV with it but is sucks on the highway. He is wound out at 65 and it struggles at everything speed or acceleration related. He did drive it to JV and I toss all of his camp gear, spare parts, ice chest and food on my trailer.

I was in my Dodge 3500 diesel with a 4800 lb camper in the bed, Jeep on a steel trailer, firewood, 50 gallons of spare water, 2 propane tanks, spare parts, camp fire gear, battery, 20 gallons of fuel, and a tool box full of tools and I still out ran him up any hill including the one up out of Morongo.

Your diesel truck is a beast Blaine. Even when towing your trailer with your TJ and magic parts bin with every spare Jeep part known to mankind on it, and the big camper on the back of the truck, you passed me up on the hill into JV. Heck I was just in my TJ with its 4.88 gearing and 35's towing that little lightweight pop-up tent trailer.

He used it to pull the front of my winch and mount out from the grill---another long story in itself-— Damn near pulled Stinger out of his shoes!;)

The 5.13s and 4.88s here by Revolution Gear. They are package deals with Master installs. Free shipping too.

sorry its taken me so long to get back to the forum to respond. just for the record
97 tj 4.0 inline 6cyl 5 speed 4" lift 33" tires 4.11 gears Dana 35
yes a shop will have to install it.. I do not have the tools or experience to set up a rear end.
options i guess would be a Dana 44, but that a lot of $$
your thoughts are always appreciated. when we bought this jeep i guess we were so excited it had no rust on it i didnt notice the roar in the rear end. so we inherited a few problems this being one of them. G2 gears were installed in 2013 but the gears did not hold up or were installed improperly.

Seen several failures of G2 stuff. Hope it's not a trend.

You'll be find with 33" tires on your Dana 35. As long as you aren't beating the snot out of it.

Generally speaking, with reasonable wheeling habits, the Dana 35 holds together pretty well with 33's at the largest. It's after installing a locker into a Dana 35 when its axle shafts start breaking.

I have a 2.5l 5speed. I just got a dana44 out of a Sahara 4.0. But I’m not sure on what tire size and gearing to go with
