When I got the jeep during Covid late 2019,the first thing I did was remove the faded flares so I could pant them.I noticed some bad rust on the driver side from the abs tray that had came through to the outside.i removed the tray and treated everything back to front with the etching crap and then brush on the por15(just trying to contain the rust under the flare).and save the fenders a little longer,5years and it looks like it is still contained?

I use Por15 as well and I would say it works

A body guy friend said it all flaked off on him,but if you use the pre etching stuff and paint over the por15 it seems to stop it.

It sounds like the prep was not done correctly. I sell alot of Por15 to the auto restoration guys that come to the store.

The store I work at is in Martin Auto Color in Burlingame and we have few stores in the bay area.

I'm seriously considering coating all new suspension and steering components with it prior to installation (my LJ is about due for a full refresh underneath). If you follow the system and do the prep, it does seem to hold up from what I've seen.

A friend of mine actually did his entire CJ body with it (bit dusty in this photo)...

Usually a phosphoric acid etch after the metal is clean as possible. Eastwood fast etch is an option that is pretty easy to use. This stuff is kinda hard on the existing paint, but once rinsed and prepped with like isopropyl alcohol it will take paint well. It'll also bleach your clothes and react with and bleach concrete (or any calcium based stones like marble/limestone).

Personally I'm not a big POR15 fan due to it's UV stability problems, but it certainly has a following.

It has no uv resistance so you have to paint over it.

While I can't say for sure what product he used on his CJ, they would appear to have a number of UV-resistant coatings.

If his jeep isn't being driven, it's sitting precisely where it is in that photo, getting dusty. Not so sure he was worried.

As for my suspension components, not too concerned with UV exposure.

I used it instead of powder coating on the front suspension of my '66 Chevelle.
That stuff is absolutely bulletproof when applied per the directions.

Very tough coating when applied over rust but it does NOT stick well to smooth metal.

I installed this Currie HP 7 years ago on my LJ. Started out as bare metal. Using their etching spray, which produced a surface rust, I applied one coat of POR-15, and then a coat of their chassis black. Still no rust other than a small spot or two. It’s a bit tired looking, could use a rattle can touch-up.
