Piss & Moan Table

I had an AC unit go out the other day. I did not want to deal with it and called the company who installed it 7 years ago. Turns out they were bought out by a different firm. Most of the time with a unit this age it’s a capacitor failure. I figured service call fee, 1 hour labor plus parts. $300 max.
First thing the tech asks me is if I’m a member of their “Service Club”. First red flag. He opens the access panel puts on some type of meter and shows me a red light on it. Says my compressor motor is bad. Then tells me I need a new capacitor, contactor and compressor rejuvenation kit. All for just $1500. $1325 if I was a “Club Member”. $500 for the capacitor, $500 for the contactor and $500 for the rejuvenation kit. I told hime to close everything up and send me an estimate in writing. Then he said he could just replace the capacitor for $500. I nicely asked him to pound sand. Luckily he did not charge me anything.
I went on line and bought the genuine factory capacitor and contactor for $40 with shipping. The factory compressor rejuvenation kit is $40 and is just an extra capacitor.
Even with a generous markup and no more than 2 hours of labor $1500 seems excessive.
I can’t believe people fall for this shit.
I’m getting to the age where I don’t want to mess with some repairs on my rentals and I have reliable and reasonable people for every trade except HVAC. I guess I need to look harder.

Looked back in my Amazon history and I paid $19 for a capacitor to fix an AC unit back in 2018.

Shenanigans of that caliber have always been out there, but it's more prevalent now because people don't resist like they used to. I think that's because there's far less DIY these days, so most people don't know any better. That encourages the vultures to engorge themselves every chance they get.

Plus there're way less service providers so very little competition, which is the main thing that keeps prices in check. Having the option of DIY is another form of competition, really, so people losing that ability really frees up remaining providers to charge higher fees.

That seems to be the new business model. I have a membership with a local HVAC company. It costs me a couple hundred/year but includes two service calls, Summer and Winter for a tune-up and filter change. More importantly, I get priority if/when I have a break down.

Yesterday was the Summer visit, and my capacitor test results were not in the recommend range. $221 to replace for material and labor.

Damn, I guess I need to be taking notes from these guys! Older system? Let's "rejuvenate" your compressor for 500 dollars!

That's still "highway robbery." The summer visit should be free, leaving the labor charged only for swapping it out. I can do that on of my units in under 15 minutes with my eyes closed. And the cap itself should be cheap. Even at $150/hr for a labor rate, which would be very high, that bill should be under $75.

I pay $350 +/- a year for a contract on both heat and AC. 24 hour service and unless it is major. no cost for repairs or labor. Have had them for over 10 years.

Also, down here in Texas, I've noticed that I can usually visually tell when the cap fails because the case bulges - all of mine have flat ends opposite the blade connectors. When they fail, that flat end becomes slightly (but noticeably) convex. If the unit's not working, and I see that convex end, I just replace that cap, and it always fixes the problem. In the rare cases when I don't DIY, I ask for the old cap back, and if it's not bulged, I may do a little investigating to keep the tech honest. Fortunately, I do have a trustworthy A/C tech, so I've never had an issue with that.

I had a great locally owned HVAC company that I used to use. Started 40+ years ago with the Dad. Strong Christian beliefs. Charged a fair price and knew you would be back again. Did the work, sent an invoice and I paid it promptly.. After he passed and his Daughter took over and things began to change. Now the Grandkids took over and things went corporate. I had them service a wall heater at a rental. The tech called saying I had to pay before he could leave. Ran down and paid and the went straight to the office to talk with the Daughter. I’ve literally spent 10s of thousands of dollars with them over the years repairs and 6 complete HVAC systems as I replaced wall and floor heaters with modern systems. I explained that we travel extensively and may not be in town or even in the country to pay. She said it won’t happen again. It did and I stopped using them. They lost 2 total HVAC system installation totaling over $30K that I had done since. I don’t mine paying, comes with the territory, but I refuse to be shit on.

EPA is making DIY AC a shit show.
I’ve got all the tools to do AC work and have in the past but fortunately found a good honest HVAC guy. I’ll still check capacitors and do what I can before I call in the troops.

Not just for you man but techs too. Now they are forcing me to install flammable refrigerant systems that are less efficient and more expensive than older types that didn't burn ozone, just global warming cow fart quotients.

At my last training I was warned about guys going to Mexico to get cheap freon getting decades in prison like they were importing heroin! Wtf!

It isn't a Texas thing.you can test caps and visually inspect.

Its like working on cars,if a large company does the work you pay for their overhead and dishonest business practices. Better to help a competent small local guy buy his daughter braces

Had a "SERENITY NOW" moment tonight. Asked to make fat dinner and wife changed her mind and did something else. And I made fat dinner for 1.

My therapy...

First bass I ever bought. This thing is in ok shape, but I'm retarded because the Seymore Duncan pickups in this cheap pearl blue early 90s Washburn XB200 cost more than the bass itself.

This was my go to road bass because it was cheap if something unfortunate should happen.

200 watt Crate BX2115 under the desk in my office with an overdrive and octave pedal.

Sorry/ not sorry if ya come home and want to sleep and Im still awake 😄

Why the hatred is my curiosity? We all have reasons we vote for who we vote for but all the hatred? What in particular is it that is so disagreeable? I know this is not the political thread but I’m really curious.

I’m always amazed by the foaming at the mouth hatred people have towards him. Personally I think he’s like every other NYC asshole. Do I agree with everything he’s done? No but he was the best of our choices.
I did not like Obama either but supported him after the election because he was our President.
