Piss & Moan Table

Developed an abscess on my upper gum last week. Called my dentist who sent me to an endodontist thinking I needed a root canal. They performed an x-ray on the tooth that I thought was the culprit and said it was infected, but the x-ray is showing a bigger problem on the next tooth. Turns out my canine tooth which had a root canal done 5 or so years ago was infected and had been wreaking havoc for quite some time (never felt a thing). I have quite the amount of bone loss and had to get an apicoectomy. An apicoectomy is where they slice your gum open and fold it over exposing the jaw bone. They clean out the infection, remove the tip of the root of the tooth and then sewed me back up with 7 stitches. All week my face has been swollen including my upper lip and gum (obviously). My wife keeps telling me I look like a dog who has been stung by a bee. Been on antibiotics all week but almost 0 pain, which is good. Downside, my dental insurance only paid for half of the operation ($1400 total) since it was considered "major" Better half then none at all I guess.

Golf car salesman told me almost the same story except his infection spread to his kidneys. He said after 11 days in the ICU his Doctor told him he almost died.

That's scary!

Aside from the abscess, I never noticed any pain or bodily functions that indicated an infection. The absecess showed up on a Tuesday, I waited to see if it would heal on its own but by Monday I was getting sliced open.

My wife thinks I overreact but this is why I don't mess around with dental stuff. Your golf cart salesman is lucky is spread to his kidneys and not his brain.

I’ve seen more than one patient with permanent brain damage due to an tooth abscess migrating to the brain. Sad to see someone in their 30s in a vegetative state. Dental problems can cause serious issues not related to the teeth themselves. Hope you recover quickly. Dental care can be expensive even with insurance.

I had a front tooth that had gotten hit at some point around 8-10 years ago. Got a root canal done. But kept having infections above it and could feel a cyst on my gum above it. In early July I had it pulled and have an implant stud in now healing until September when they will complete the cap.
@tworley your story makes me glad I finally quit being stubborn and dealt with it!

Good to hear!

I've got so much money wrapped up in my damn mouth from braces, root canals, crowns and now this. I brush/floss regularly and get cleanings twice a year, but it seems something always pops up

I was listening to a local radio station (Maine) on a Sunday. They were talking to a dentist. He said I shouldn't say this but in denial school they told us a patient can do everything and still have a lot of dental problems.

Everyone has bacteria in their mouth it's 50 percent from your mom, 50 percent from dad. If you are born with a bad mixture of bacteria there isn't anything you can do.

So the next time I saw my dentist I told him about what the dentist said on the radio. He said it's true he has patients that are always brushing, flossing etc and they still have issues. He said there is nothing that can change the bacteria in the mouth.

I decided to ask him about cleanings. I said when I come in with no problems I notice after she focuses on a tooth for longer than the rest. I end up having to come see you about that tooth.

He wouldn't admit it was a scam. I decided no more cleanings I'll brush, and if I have a problem I'll see a dentist.

My teeth have been fine, and my wallet is happy.

Thats interesting. My mom has periodontal disease, but she has kept it at bay, but does have a few implants.

There was a time when I went in and they took the normal x-rays. Came back and told me my canine was infected and I needed a root canal. The tooth never bothered me, looked normal, but the x-ray was showing something. I didn't argue because I certainly am not a dentist. The week my abscess showed up I had my teeth cleaned literally the day before. I called and raised a bit of stink because how was that not caught on the x-ray they had taken??

Sometimes I do think its a scam...

FWIW, I once went 18 months without a cleaning. I'll *NEVER* do that again! My gums were a mess.

I believe that, and I think I lucked out with the right bacteria. I brush well, and 2x a day, but I'm positively terrible about flossing and have gone stretches of 3+ years between cleanings without ill effect. They had a little extra work cleaning up some of the hard deposits below the gumline but no cavities, no symptoms, no bleeding when I brushed, anything like that.

When I have had to go in for something unscheduled where I was worried it was becoming an abscess, it always turns out to be something like a popcorn shell jammed in there and once it's irrigated everything is fine.

I’m a big fan of my water flosser.

My wife and I went to pick up our travel trailer at dealer, it was getting more warranty work done. I dropped it off last week because we weren't getting any 110 in the outlets. Also I noticed that the carbon monoxide sensor wasn't working either. They had done some previous work a few months ago to the shelf that runs across the top of the bed and my wife was not happy about some staples that were sticking up to far. So they supposedly fixed the 110 and the carbon monoxide sensor, and was supposed to look into the staples. We didn't get to bring it home because they didn't fix the carbon monoxide sensor, which of course is illegal not to have working, and they didn't get to the staples of course. One good thing though, they've been waiting for Jayco to send a new door that we've been waiting on for at least a year. So that got done, yay? Hopefully I can pick it up Tuesday.

Today it's only 93F right now. But with the humidity, the heat index is 111F.

It is not a dry heat. It feels like stepping into a sauna and in 10 minutes you're wet enough to look like you were in a pool.

You can't sweat to cool off, it doesn't evaporate. South of here the heat index is 129F.

High on Tuesday is expected to be 102F. We'll see how the heat index goes with that. Hot and humid brings the risk of big storms.

Here's the current humidity at my home weather station.
