I’ve been chasing the P0442 Small Evap Leak for months. I’ve replaced rubber elbows and deteriorated hoses with new silicone hoses, and even replaced some cracked hard line near the fuel tank with silicone.

Question:
I removed the hose end from the purge valve in the engine compartment and attached the smoke machine. With the vehicle off - I have smoke pouring out the top of the Evap Leak Detection Pump Filter in the passenger rear. In a non-energized state, should the valve in the leak detection pump be normally open and vented to atmosphere? Smoke is escaping from here:

I don’t know the answer, but I’m interested if anyone knows. I am about to go down this stupid rabbit hole with a P0456 and P0457.

Not sure, but my gut tells me smoke coming from there is not a problem. But I’m sure someone here will know the actual answer.

Have you replaced your gas cap?

I don’t have a definite answer but when I troubleshot my small evap leak I had smoke coming out there. I plugged the hose there and smoked tested.

I actually smoke tested in both directions.

I eventually found that my leak detection pump was causing my problem.
