i've had my 2006 for 11 years and 70K miles ( bought 65K, now 130K ).
never thought about overdrive at all that i remember.
my only " car ", i don't off road, but i live in massachusetts in the berkshires and my driveway is 700 feet uphill pretty steep. lots of unpaved roads out here. but my trips are generally under 30 miles and mostly sub 45 speed limit.

is there any reason i should use or not use the overdrive switch on the dash ? i do notice it's not on or off forever but resets i guess every time you shift into low 1 or 2, or reverse and probably park i assume. so it would be constantly f ing with it.

The first thing you should do every single time you get in the vehicle is turn the OD off.

The only time to ever use it is if you're going fast on the highway.

Agree with this. I turn it off when I start the Jeep. Only turn it on if I'm on the freeway and have reached the speed I want. Then turn it off again when I'm getting off the freeway.

With only 190HP, it's not like you're going to accidentally go too fast.

Could you explain the logic behind this please.

Normally vehicles are designed to be good, reliable and dutiful. If OD was not meant to be used unless at 65'ish they would have designed it that way.

Are you saying every car that has OD should have it turned off unless on the highway or just wranglers?

I'm not following the logic.

Appreciate it.

AI's opinion... 🤷‍♂️

When you design a vehicle with 190 h.p. and a 2.57 - 1 highest gear ratio , it isn't the best example of a good , reliable , or dutiful .

It works fine with stock sized tires - as it was designed. Bigger tires, boom…

How familiar are you with the 42RLE?

Driven it for 83k miles and never once turned OD off. Drive normal, I don't have the need for speed. I have other cars for that addiction.

Damn...kudos to you then. I think you're the only person on the forum with a 42RLE who has not been driven mad by the awful constantly hunting for overdrive.

I don't need to say much more. If anyone else in here is honest they'll be sharing their experiences shortly ;)

Just say no. :p

I don’t mess with my OD around here as everything is flat. When I’ve been out west where there’s elevation change I’ll shut it off.

Never turned it off on my LJ running 33 x10.50 x 15 tires with stock gearing, on my TJ running 35 x 12.50 x 15 tires with 4.88 to 1 gearing I didnt turn it off much. Never saw any issues with my transmissions on either, I did do transmission flushes on both when I modified them both with the larger tires. Granted it wasn't a jack rabbit on acceleration but I drive slow most of the time anyway

Discussed this with my wife. This came up when I told her to turn it off unless on the freeway. She is the money saver in the relationship, but doesn't drive the TJ much. Said she would never turn it off because you're saving gas. She also didn't know the button was there. I'm the opposite, looking to enjoy life. TJ life is less enjoyable with OD on.

It's not like we're talking about a vehicle with 400HP. We're at half that. So it's not like you're throwing money in the trash by turning off the OD. You're choosing to use what little power it has and not have odd issues with slowing down and speeding up. If you prefer less power and more money, leave it on.

i turned my od off every time when running stock 3.73 gears on 33” tires. since regearing to 5.13 i never turn it off and we have plenty of good size hills here in east texas. if i start slowing down on a hill i give it a shot of the skinny pedal and it drops a gear and all is good.

After the regear you have a 3.54 - 1 highest gear ratio , very usable.
