after rummaging around up under my dash with the glovebox out and UNFEEDING the connector/cable for my Garmin GPS unit from the top of the dash and pulling it back down
and out at the side of the dash/glovebox
I now have only HIGH and the next step down on the switch for heat control

have i toasted the control unit? switch?

what do I look for to figure this out?
im NOT good at looking at and figuring out schematics and im NOT the brightest crayon in the box I should have named my jeep "SHORTBUSS"

Sounds to me like your blower motor resistor is fried.

I would inspect the wiring harness going to the speed control switch for signs of overheating.
As posted about; you could have one or more resistors burned out inside the speed control resistor module.
IF the resistors are burned out there is usually a reason such as the ventilation motor pulling too many amps due to resistance in the windings.

i just dealt with this. ended up doing the blower motor as well.

these fail over time becauase the windings on the blower motor get gummed up and it creates resistance and that burns out the resistors. all i had was speed 4. the blower motor was barely able to turn by hand...should have spun freely. if yours is like that...just pony up the bucks and replace it all including the connector for the resistor (its a kit)

I just fixed this same issue this past weekend — it’s almost certainly your blower motor resistor. Replaced mine and it works like new. Only worked on high prior to replacing.

while driving yesterday I noticed when it was on the "second speed" when driving it blew heat
when stopped at a light and at idle NO heat

Sounds like a vacuum problem caused by insufficient vacuum to keep the damper actuator in the selected position.
There is supposed to be a check valve (plastic disc) inline where the vacuum supply penetrates the sponge material just below the A/C lines at the firewall that should keep vacuum in the system under acceleration.
There could be a leak in the vacuum system tubing or rubber connectors.
I would trace the vacuum poly tubing looking for leaks. The line starts at the intake manifold connector and branches off to the CC actuator (if installed), then runs up along the firewall to the passenger side splits off to thru the sponge material for A/C controls and continues downward to the vacuum accumulator between the fender well and the firewall.
