And even the oil pressure gauge as it is now started as a "real" oil pressure indicator during the early years of the TJ. The factory only converted/reprogrammed it to only show a mid-scale reading (if the true oil pressure is ok) because too many new TJ owners were complaining about the oil pressure going up and down. Dealers couldn't convince most of them that it was normal so they talked the factory into reprogramming it so it did not reflect the true oil pressure's normal ups and downs.
I didn't want to hijack the "Hood Louvers" thread, so I'm starting my own. The Muddog is a 2002, 4.0, 5 speed. The oil gauge is the aforementioned dummy gauge. JFTHOI, I'm wondering if I can replace the sender with an earlier one so that it will give a "real" reading.
If the answer is "it goes through the ECM," then it would be a hard "no". So does it? or can it be converted?

Yeah hate to say it but it's a hard no. It was reprogrammed in the PCM where the sensor 'switch' signal wiring connects directly to.

That's what I expected. Thanks Jerry. Is there an unused port or fitting where an aftermarket unit could be connected? I wouldn't want to disconnect the factory unit and wind up with a CEL or worse.

Not and use the oil pressure gauge in the cluster. I stopped worrying about it years ago on my '04, despite my '97 having had a real oil pressure gauge. If the true oil pressure drops to a dangerously low pressure it will alert you.
