So I picked up a new (to me) daily driver, now that the Boy is 16, he has taken over my XJ as his ride (I honestly bought it a few years ago as a project car for me and him to fix up and work on together, with the intention of giving it to him when he got his Driver's license... mission accomplished).

Well, I was missing how handy it was to have an unmodded vehicle with A/C to daily drive and take road trips in. I love my TJ, but 5 inches of lift, 35's, no A/C, and no protection from the elements during the summer can get old for routine errands.

I've been watching the local "Lemon Lot" for a few months. It's a county lot that you can buy a $10 permit and park a vehicle on for 2 weeks to sell.

Well, a decent WJ popped up there last week, and the asking price was 5k, so I called the guy.

It's a Laredo, with the 4.0, a 42re and a 242 t-case. It needed tires an a little cosmetic work, but everything else was working good. It was his daughter's high school car, but she's going off to college, so they are buying her an econo-box Mazda.

It has 135k miles, but looked really well maintained, not like a kid's car, except for a dent in the passenger front fender. Owner says it was his father in law's vehicle, who bought it new. When Father in law asked away 5 years ago, owner's daughter started driving it. Owner is not a car guy, but understood basic maintenance, and had regular service done at the Jeep dealership the next town over.

The trans fluid is darker that I like, but didn't smell burnt. Oil needs changing but it's not black, and there was no excessive carbon buildup that I could see looking in the oil fill hole. As preventative maintainence, I'm going to change engine oil, trans and t-case fluid, and diff oil. Probably will tackle a radiator flush in a few weeks, too.

I'm pretty happy with it as a decent little suv to run errands in, and am looking forward to getting the maintainence up to snuff and maybe doing some light body work and paint correction.

Exactly what I’ve been looking for to tow my boat back and forth to the local lakes since I sold my Tahoe.
Don’t wanna kill my TJ towing with it.

By the way, XJ’s in my area are out of sight price wise. I’ve looked at several and the current owners won’t move on them.

That's no lie! I bought my son's like 3 years ago for $3500. I could easily get 6k here locally for it now, and all we have done is basically maintainence and minor convenience stuff. It's wild what the go for.

As far as the WJ goes, it is way more comfortable than I anticipated. I've done all the maintenance items that needed attention since I've bought it, except fixing the paint. I've sanded and cleaned it up, and primered where I burned through, but I'm nervous about trying to match 20 year old metal flake paint.🤣

I bought a 2014 WK for my wife. Took me several weeks to get it right both mechanically and cosmetically after the previous owner neglected it for several years. Wet sanded it for 3 days before buffing.
Just did all four shocks and struts ( front struts are 2.5” lift) , 2022 Gladiator wheels and tires, and it is now exactly how I want it.
Nice garage mate for the TJ.

What grit did you wet sand at? I'm trying to decide if I want to try to color match the 20 year old Graphite Metallic, or if I just want to sand the whole damn thing down and shoot a coat of farm and implement Massey Ferguson Grey on it.

Well, the daily driver WJ has morphed a bit. It just felt weird to have a Jeep that wasn't suitable for Jeep stuff. To that end, I decided to do some mild modding to it.

Installed an Iron Rock Offroad 4" lift and a set of axles I bought off marketplace that had 3.73 gearing as opposed to my 3.55 gearing. Paid $100 for the set. Also threw in a Spartain lunchbox locker in the rear. (Ignore the dirt)

I have a set of 265-70r17 (metric 32's)Nitto Ridge Grapplers I'm going to put on soon. I found them for 160 each, and jumped on em.

Tom Wood's took care of my driveshaft needs, and I got rid of those ridiculous Rzeppa joints on the front drive shaft. (I also bought a sweet hat from them!)

Rockhard 4x4 makes a rear bumper with tire carrier that I liked, so it's sitting in my garage waiting on my next days off. (Pic from rockhard website)

HK offroad makes a stubby winch bumper that blends very well with the existing lines of the WJ, and actually hides in the facia of the plastic bumper very nicely. I have a smittybilt winch coming for the bumper. (Pic from HK Offroad website)

Eventually I'll get a roof rack as well. This is still going to fulfill my daily driver duty, but it will pull double duty as a camping rig/ mild trail rig as well.

Finally got the tires on. Ordered a matching spare wheel through Amazon... what a pain in the ass. They sent me the right wheel, but in black. Sent it back, and finally received my refund, so I tried again ordering through Summit this time.

This weekend I'm hoping to get the rear bumper out of the boxes and start painting it.

Also scheduled a shop visit with a local mechanic I trust to remove a stuck bleeder valve on my passenger rear brake caliper. When I ent to bleed brakes after the axle swap, it appears someone in the past rounded off the bleeder valve. Sucks, but I'd rather just have it replaced right than bubba something together in the garage.

Another step closer, and I'm really liking the way it's coming together!

Buddy who was a body and paint guy earlier I life is doing a scuff-n-spray raptor line job for me on my WJ. We agreed that he wouldn't blow it apart and wouldn't fix minor dings, but would make sure the existing paint was taken down far enough that there wouldn't be issues with adherence and that he would take care of surface prep on existing chips and crows feet, etc.

Paint is Battleship Grey, and the rocker panels will be black. Im pretty happy with the pics he just sent!

I bought the raptor liner, and he's charging me $800 for the labor. Im pretty stoked!
