Utah Moab in May 2025

Day 1 Cliffhanger and, like The Branch Manager, might be interested in the Rim afterwards.
Might as well go FTB on this little bucket list item.

Here's what we've always had in the GMRS. As said we usually have someone who can't get the DCS codes to work so we tend to run without them. I think I threw my CB away. I'll have a couple handhelds ready to go as loaners.

I have NO clue how to input a DCS code on my Midland or if I can.... Since it seems everyone has decided that CB's are out & GMRS are in I won't bring my handheld...

I've got 3 Baofeng radios & 2 Midland radios I can bring if needed.

As long as you have all the gmrs channels programed in the radio, you will be fine. We just pick a channel to use and If we find that there are too many others using it, we switch to another channel.

Here are mine from the last few years. I just put them on a cabinet in my garage.

Do you have a place in mind?
I see @macleanflood is boondocking as well. If I do this again another year I'll plan on that since I'm dry camp ready.
Part of this year's plan was to scout spots but sounds like that's figured out.
I plan to arrive either Thursday night or Friday morning. I will find a dispersed camp site somewhere in this area NW of Moab. My plan is to explore some trails in this area Fri/Sat morning.

I don't even know if I can or how to load channels into it... Need to download the owners manual and read it as I'm driving down to Moab.... OK I'll wait until I'm not driving... but need to bone up on how it works...

Are your Baofeng radios the common UV-5R model? If so, they do not come with the gmrs frequencies programmed since they are technically ham radios. You need a cable like the one pictured and software (I use CHiRP) to program them.

If the Midlands are actual GMRS radios then they should have the channels already programmed.

Yes I have the UV-5R models... The unlocked ones I think or something like that. I'd bought them 10-15 years ago... I'll have to look but I think I bought that cable and it came with a CD disc for programing?

And yes the Midland in my TJ plus the handhelds have 50 channels programed in them. And I don't remember reading about any way to do any programing with the radio in my TJ. The handhelds came with it as a PROMO deal.
But I still need to at least read up a little on how to use the mobile unit in my TJ. Up til now it was kind of a low priority on my list of things to do. Of course I put the manual some where that I could find it and now can't. But it's easy enough to download it on my Kindle.

I'm leaving Oregon whenever I can sneak out of work Thursday. 18 hour drive. Don't know if I'll cannonball it or find someplace and toss out the bedroll.

If you don't mind company drop a pin when you find a spot and I'll swing by.

I'm leaving Thursday also but won't arrive in Moab until Saturday. Can't check in before 2PM & then want to get my area setup for the week...

I will only be boondocking out there Thursday night, then moving to Red Desert starting Friday night and staying there until the 10th. If you get in Friday and want to wheel, just let me know

Is the only reason to program the GMRS freq's into a Baofeng radio is if you don't have a mobile radio in your rig? Is there a limit to the number of freq's you can load into the radio?

Which has the farther range? The Baofeng or Midland handheld? If you're traveling with another vehicle which pair of radios would be better when driving on the freeway? And while I understand technically the Baofeng radios are using Ham freq's and you are supposed to have a license to operate would you want to use the Ham freq's or GMRS freq's for vehicle to vehicle coms while traveling?
Sorry I know about ZERO about all this.

No, youd want to program them to have pre-set frequencies you can jump to. It's similar to speed dial vs knowing and typing in the phone number. There's 22 "channels" (defined frequencies) for GMRS - so it takes the knowing what that frequency is and saying "get on channel 19".

Is there a limit to the number of freq's you can load into the radio?
Yes, but you're not likely going to do enough where it would be an issue for you.

The non-handheld will typically have much further range - a better antenna + more wattage available.

If you're traveling with another vehicle which pair of radios would be better when driving on the freeway?
I've had my mobile unit (car mounted) and handhelds in various setups, within reasonable range it doesn't really matter if you're using the handhelds.

And while I understand technically the Baofeng radios are using Ham freq's and you are supposed to have a license to operate would you want to use the Ham freq's or GMRS freq's for vehicle to vehicle coms while traveling?
Use GMRS, it's a $35 license, no test, and nearly all the benefits of HAM without having to be a radio nerd that kills any joy of talking to people through radio frequencies.

My BIL & sis are following me down to Moab & are going sightseeing while I'm wheeling so I'm thinking we could use the handhelds in our rigs as we're driving down to communicate. I'll be in my motorhome & they're in a Ford Explorer. Just not sure which of the two pairs will have the farther range...
Or does it not matter.
Since I have either a pair of the Baofeng radios or a pair of Midland GMRS we could use either. I guess we can just have both in the rigs on the first day and test them out and see if there is a performance difference between them.

Yes I have my GMRS license already.

Either of the hand helds should work fine for communication between vehicles while you are traveling to Moab. If you are not able to program the Baofeng radios with the gmrs channels before leaving, I would probably just forget about them and use the Midlands.

Alright ALL. Trail sign-up time.

Y'all are a pain in my ass, if you submit it with a name not on the forum I'm deleting the response

https://forms.gle/VXeyEaknbTFZvGwv6

Expect to meet at the trailhead for the trail by 8am. We will try to start at 8, so if you want/need time to air down, shoot the shit, etc., try to be there early.

If you're unfamiliar with any of the trails, you can go here to read about them: https://www.rr4w.com/Trails-Home.cfm

There are provisions in the form for people that are showing up early/late so that we can hook you guys up to coordinate hitting a trail together without me, the master chief of planning and activities.

And like last time, just remember, if you don't vote, your opinion doesn't matter. 🙂

I am not going to make it.
I was a solid maybe up until this week, but there are only so many days in a year.
Deb and I have a very full calendar this summer so we going to take some days off and go sit on a beach.
Next year I will be retired and will be in for sure.
You guys have fun and be smart.

I've got to go thru my Bugout Bag and see if I have that cable and then if I do if I can even figure out how to program them... It had just dawned on me a few days ago that we could use the radios to communicate while traveling instead of using cell phones... mainly for those times where there isn't any cell service but also just to have as backup..... Plus having the radios are nice when pulling into a tight camping spot or tight area in a parking lot of such.

I know, I know, I know........BUT, I need to drive over to California anyway to pick up my mid-arm kit. any time I am the close to the ocean I need to hang there for awhile. Wheeling season is coming to a close in AZ and it's time to finally do my mid arm this summer (in my newly air conditioned garage).
