Wife and i are retired Navy, daughter is Navy, but married an Army guy she met at VMI.
Poor bastard can't win anything around here!

He's a genuinely good kid though. Really proud to have him in the family.

Very little info. Happened on the 0400-0800, the absolute worst watch for mishaps.
Had to be a series of errors and poor decisions. You know that plane was squawkin.
It's not easy to engage an unknown, you really have to fuck up several times on multiple levels to pull this off.
Glad the fly boys are ok, but damn!
That is a shitty day for all involved.

As someone who was shot by friendly fire I know all too well how easy it is and how FUCKED UP your day is afterwards. And yes I'm glad that the flyboys are OK.

I was ADA for 23 years (MANPADS) - no way they were at weapons free, probably weapons tight. Should have needed to be positively id'ed as hostile prior to engaging. IFF transponder maybe not working? I'd like to see what system got it. Lot of shit going on, but we knew we had friendly assets up. ADCOORD or ABMOC should have had staffing awake.

When we shot down a Tornada (Brits) in the Gulf (and I think another Hornet) the PAC was set in auto mode, and looking for specific flight path characteristics in it's AO. No IFF from the aircraft, and it was outside the standard approach vectors. Computer said "Hold my beer" and took the shot. Maybe same thing here?

I don't know much about naval ADA systems and their controls, but I'd think when you are assigned to a fucking AIRCRAFT CARRIER you'd keep that thing off automatic engagement.
