Hello! New to the site, not new to jeeps but still learning. I've had two CJs and a 2003 Rubicon. I live in Columbus and am heading to Traverse City to check out an LJ. Listing here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1Q8v75PfU3/

They replaced the engine and drive train from a 2006 TJ that has 73k miles. I have the invoice for all the work done. I read the "what to look for" forum, I am comfortable poking around. Other than non surface rust, is there a deal breaker that would turn me around? Anyone in the area bored tomorrow? Haha
 
Just curious. You live in a Rust Belt state. Why are you traveling to a worse Rust Belt state to buy a Jeep? :unsure:
p.s. Besides the visible rust, a red flag to me is having a "well maintained" Jeep with 100,000 miles on it that the PO already ruined an engine and transmission.

Reasons to pass: Rust, new engine/trans, painted top, 100K and showing 73K on the o, MI.
If serious, need to look south of KY at least. Can find a rust free LJ for near the $15k.

I have a 2016 e-golf that I want to get rid of due to it not being mostly a commuter car...with the family, I wanted to get back to something with more range. Kind of a perfect storm of my wife being off all week, and this one popping up. A 6 hour drive back seemed reasonable to do to not disrupt any other things. But now I am having 2nd thoughts.

jeez, tough crowd. According to the invoice, they reset the O to 73k due to that being the mileage on the replacement engine.

Rust is a real problem for a jeep. Do not buy one with rust.
You will learn the hard way if you do.

Haha fair enough. Its why I joined! I ended up cancelling. I talked to a guy yesterday who restores CJs and he said the same thing...tried not to lose hope, but now yall are echoing the exact same thing, and rightfully so.
 
Looks like if you are willing to travel then you can find a nice one . I prefer to find a really nice stock one and do the upgrades myself, but there are some nice ones already built . You just need to see if they are built with quality components .

I wouldn't mind a stock one...but they seem to be similar price. The one in SC has a hard top, lift and properly geared axles. But you're right, has to be quality parts.

That one was listed 30 weeks ago so it's likely gone.

If it's not I suspect it has issues that drove buyers away.

Be aware that if you get an 05 or 06 you will likely have to replace the CPU at some point (contact Wranglerfix here on the site) and those years are also susceptible to the OPDA going out.

I was going to fly down tomorrow but he said he couldn't make it happen. Then I saw the one I posted here earlier. So this one is still a possibility.

Replacing the oil pump would probably be the first thing I do haha

As a fellow Ohioan who has searched long and hard for a worthy TJ/LJ, it's not worth it IMO. Even though $14k isn't horrible for an LJ up here, there's a lot of weirdness going on here.

If I am dropping $14,000 on a 20 year old vehicle, it's not gonna spend (or have spent) 2 seconds in the salt. But that's second to my biggest red flag. This is a "Frankenjeep" with a rolled back odometer. This is what I'd expect to see at a "buy here pay here" lot.

This is 100% a no go. The owner has illegally rolled back the odometer to reflect powertrain mileage (which also may not even be correct) and, mind you, you DO have to get a VIN inspection done on the Jeep before the title office in Ohio will issue you a title. IDK if the title office checks the MI DMV/Title records, but this sounds like a potential titling nightmare. An owner changing the odo despite the front end, axles, etc. reflecting the true mileage which is stored in the PCM is honestly ridiculous. What condition was this 73k vehicle in? Was it a rust belt vehicle with the original u-joints who's lifespan will be significantly decreased due to Michigan winters?

Knowing the fact that the owner actually changed the odometer because he replaced an engine/trans (maybe axles/shafts too, which might not even be a good thing...), I find it hard to believe that there's anything more than semi-honesty here. Furthermore, how did the PO beat a 4.0 hard enough to require a powertrain/drivetrain swap at 100,000 miles? I'd delete the conservation the second he said something about changing the odometer. As I said, it's a possible titling nightmare come time to issue an Ohio title...

I have no idea if there are "exceptions", but a quick Google search shows tampering with an odometer in Michigan is a felony lol

Im glad I passed. I never considered the legality of the odometer thing. He claims mice got at the wiring harnesses and that shorted things? The invoice says engine fire. A 2006 parts jeep supplied wiring, PCM, engine, drive train etc. I was also worried about the opda.

Read your comment again, perhaps the odometer changed because they replaced the PCM

Yeah, odometer tampering is a BIG no-no, even in Ohio. If there was an engine fire, I'd expect an insurance claim. Nowhere in that process would I expect felony odometer tampering. This guy is either lying, a moron, or both.
 
I suspect the cluster is reading the correct mileage from the pcm. If you look at the engine bay pictures, it does have the 05-06 pcm. Four plug vs three. Note the lack of tcm by the washer tank also.

Someone swapped the engine with some portion of the wiring harness, possibly the cluster as well.

edit: Still sleazy, wouldn't touch it myself.
