Lonewolf's 1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport

Next up was a trip to Fordyce, me and @Alex01 wanted to enter at the committee crossing and exit at meadow lakes, so essentially do the rest of the trail we hadn’t done. There was some snow on the ground and it made everything slightly more difficult. The water crossing was pretty deep and was almost coming in over the top of the half doors!

The wheeling was great , we had to use a bit more wheel speed than usual to get out some of the slick rock faces but all in all it was great until it wasn’t. We got to winch hill three I decided I would try the hard line 1st after about 20 minutes of trying I decided that since I didn’t make it more than 8 feet it wasn’t happening. Alex was next up he made it all the way till the last climb and we heard something let go, it ended up being his front axle shaft U joint.

There is no way he was going to be able to back up or winch backwards so we figured the only way Forward was up! I was turning around to take the bypass to get up top to winch him forward and midway up the climb something snapped in my front end and I lost 4wheel Drive and had a horrible grinding noise. Needless to say I was out of the game, luckily there was a broken Toyota and a Jeep on 42s at the top so we were able to use them as a winch point and get Alex to the top where we could make repairs. That was a feat in itself because he ended up overheating his winch so bad it stopped working and almost flopped sideways.

Sounds like an epic trip! You never remember the trips that go well. But you remember, and will be talking about, trips like this forever.

But tell the truth, LW - you took the bypass with the intent of high-tailing it out of there and leaving Alex behind. Good thing you broke or poor Alex might still be sitting there…

😉

We were able To get him to the top and pull out the broken u joint and made the choice to go back downhill as he had only 3 Wheel Drive and I had two wheel drive unless it was a hard climb I would put it in four and cringe at the sounds coming out of the front axle. It was a long process but we made it down to the Crossing where I got stuck going downhill and I needed Alex’s assistance but he was stuck coming up hill. It added about 30 minutes to the day of just trying to make it a few feet. Alex ended up strapping me all the way out and we made it back to the trucks in mostly one piece.

My damage from the day was unknown broken axle parts, a ripped soft top and bent my steering.

Good times. Great way to end a summer wheeling season, though it looked like winter that day, and set us up for a winter rebuilding season.

I just realized I haven’t updated this in awhile so I’ll take few posts to get it up to speed

The axle break from Fordyce ended up being a broken RCV axle. The cage holding the bearings cracked and stripped the axle shaft

It was replaced under the lifetime warranty And I threw it back together. After that, we did a trip to Hollister. And luckily nothing broke

I really wanted to step up to 37s but wasn’t quite sure if they would work out , so I used a set of free JK wheels and @Alex01 take off 37 all terrains from his JL
IMG_9959.jpeg

They fit ok but the offset wasn’t perfect, it rubbed some stuff that was easily trimmed. I ran it like this through winter
IMG_0009.jpeg

IMG_0020.jpeg

I liked the extra clearance that they provided but I luckily found some take off steel wheels that had a much better offset. I installed them and took it to Hollister to do a hard test of fitment before deciding on what tire size to use

They worked really well and I was happy with the fitment, ground clearance and drivability so I ordered a set of 37/1250R17 Toyo M/T

Thank you! I’m really happy with them as well. They work good in the rocks and in the snow.

I liked mine a LOT... And sold a lot of people on them when they saw how well they worked in the snow... I was running the 35x13.5x15 tires at the time.

One of my favorite pictures of my TJ back when it was mostly stock

And when I was showing everyone how well they worked in the snow.

Yes, they were siped. Been something I've done on my tires now for a while. Used to drive OTR & learned about it then & how much of a difference it can make.

I did a few more trips with no issues and did a day trip to Fordyce, while showing off on a rock I noticed that the rear upper arms were ripping off the frame.
IMG_1499.jpeg

IMG_1498.jpeg

I have rewelded cracks in them a few times but they were stretched and pulled away from the frame substantially and that also explained the erratic drivability issues I was chasing which I thought was a worn out track bar. I went home and cut everything off trying to decide what I was going to do
IMG_1642.jpeg
IMG_1740.jpeg
My first thought was a mid arm but that was out of my price range with trying to move to the sierras. I had 1/4 wall 2x2 box tubing so went the cheap route and bought brackets , weld in bungs and Johnny joints from Clayton. I used 2x2 1/4 wall for the lowers and 1.5x1.5 1/4 wall for the uppers. I also hot glued the supplied axle truss on

I also cut off the coil perches and centered them to keep the coils happy

The next trip was Barrett lake jeep trail. It’s a short rock crawl trail that is all obstacles the whole time and ends up at a mountain lake . It was going great until I tried to bump a obstacle and broke another RCV and had to be strapped into camp and back out the next day

As @Alex01 can attest I’m pretty easy on them, they were used so maybe the original owner was hard on them. RCV warranted them no problem.

I remember someone talking about the stuff with a lifetime warranty isn’t as tough as you would think that you end up paying double upfront and it pays for the cost of a replacement because most people don’t wheel hard enough to break anything. And the company comes out ahead.

Well we don't have the same axle they are basically the same shafts I think.... I have a Ford HP44 narrowed to Waggy width and have the 30 spline shafts & RCV slugs.
But I've got 38X13.5x17 M/T Baja Pro XS tires & a STaK's t-case with 3.05 or 5.44 low ranges... And I've got a Hemi ... I would like to say I'm not hard on stuff but that would be a lie...

Was this last year or this year. I really want to hit Barrett lake this year.

Ya the RCV broke on the bypass on a nothing climb while I was broken, stuck, and nearly flipped over to the right. Good times.
