Key cylinders: Am I on the right track?

My new-to-me ‘99 is equipped with the transponder key system. The seller only had one transponder key and one non-transponder duplicate key. Both are very worn with no sharp teeth. I’m “that guy” who always has a few spare keys for my vehicles. I have no idea how many previous owners are out there in the world.

I’m thinking that rather than just having my local ACE cut and program another key from my already worn out key I’ll just buy a new set of lock cylinders for the ignition, doors, and tailgate with a non-transponder key set then have the local guy cut me a new set of transponder keys from the new fresh keys then program them to my Jeep. I’m ASSuming that the transponder system is a separate part near the ignition lock cylinders and not a part of it??? If so, this should be a sound plan, no?

An added bonus will be that I’ll have the only keys and that a prior owner (however unlikely) can come and borrow it.

Do any of you know if the system can be cleared so that only new keys can be recognized by the vehicle? AND… what about the two glove box key locks and passenger airbag turn-off switch? Are these operable by any key or will I need to re-key those to match my new keys?

Thank you in advance,
Tom.

Wolf Security has complete matching sets of door and ignition cylinders.

Lock smith can rekey the glove box and center console.

ACE doesn't program anything. They clone the signal from your original key. Here's how you program a new key:

Alternatively since most SKIM systems eventually fail and it's near impossible to find a replacement...get @Wranglerfix www.wranglerfix.com to remove the SKIM program from your PCM and remove the module from your steering column.

Hmmmm…. I was wondering about just removing the transponder system. That might make more sense. Thank you for that suggestion.

Can you remove one of the key cylinders and have a locksmith make a new key using it? That would be a lot easier than replacing all of the key cylinders.

Probably, but buying all new cylinders would probably be less expensive than paying a good locksmith to make me just one key. I haven’t ruled that out though. There are a lot of solutions to this as of yet, non-existent problem that I’m trying to solve.

Wolf Security has been a bit frustrating. I emailed him, per the website instructions, asking to have additional keys made for the 4-lock set, and a week or so later got a response that he needed to know the size of the door lock face then he'd tell me how to order.

Ok, I sent a picture showing caliper measurement (original full hard-doors/locks), and now it has been another week with no response. Granted, Holidays.

Anyone know a good place to get a complete matched set of locks/Keys? Non-transponder.
