JMT's idea: list one mod you regret

I regret going to 33's and re-gearing. Most would think I'm nuts, but the rabbit hole that those mods took me down was expensive and I have yet to find the bottom of said hole.
Still regret it after looking at this picture?

First sign of a bad move was during installation. If you just look at them the wrong way the powder coat will flake. And i'm not much of a bling kind of guy so it makes it even worse I even thought of doing this.
Always wandered about powder coating flexible things. Good to know. We are all guilty of painting something red in the undercarriage. I even went through a Plasti dip phase.
Makes me wonder what caused your issue. King coil overs are powdercoated blue from the factory. (correct me if I am wrong) Haven't seen many flaking springs down here in the southeast.

Here is a pic from a KOH "car."

And you had issues as soon as you started installing?

Maybe not.

Down payment for a house or have @mrblaine build a jeep the right way the first time? Hmmmm

Just kidding, Blaine. I already have a house and I've owned several jeeps, but I've never had a jeep built right the first time. If such a thing actually exists it would be worth every dollar.

If I had paid to have a Jeep built for me 5 years ago my needs would have changed. Similarly, I wouldn't have wanted the Jeep I'm building today 5 years ago. Finicky creatures we are?

I can't think of any real regrets, but haven't had the TJ very long.
I bedlined my YJ and loved it (never had carpet in that) I will probably do the TJ, AND keep the carpet. The floor is getting scratched through to the primer from sand and dirt always getting under the carpet.

Right now I'm trying to figure out if I will regret selling the two M8274 winches I have and just getting something lighter / smaller for the twice a year it actually gets used pulling some duffus out of a ditch.

I absolutly do not regret taking off the 35s that came with it and going to 33's.

Oh it goes deeper actually.....

I am embarrassed to say how much money I had in that Jeep and I sold it for about 1/5th of that value. Which then caused me to pay $10k for a 2001 TJ that had a Dana30/Dana44, a 4 inch lift and 35's....

BUT OH NO! That wasn't good enough. I had to try and recreate the jeep I ruined. So a Ford Dana 44 Front/ Ford 9" Rear combo went under it...Mind you both axles had to be rebuilt.

AND a 3 link/4 link with Johnny joints at both ends that I built. Stretch to yet again 100" wheelbase.

Only to be traded for a RZR 4 that I crashed into a tree and nearly killed myself with last year. ( I got pics but that are pretty nasty)

So lets recap:

Thousands (over $20) in original jeep, Thousands in a Stupid Dana 60 upgrade, $10k for a new TJ...Thousands in a Dana44/Ford 9" upgrade, Thousands in a 3-link/4-link. Brain damage and near death in a RZR

Regrets? I've known a few....
As we say in the south; Bless his heart, but..........

How come you don't refi the car through a bank, or IMHO, the best credit union out there, PenFed? Then use the cash to pay off that high interest rate CC and get into a 5% interest car loan.

Rule #1 for credit cards. Never put on a credit card what you don't already have cash for, unless it's 100% unavoidable.
Rule #2 for credit cards. Never carry a balance. Ever.

Yep as soon as I was installing I noticed the coating being on the more brittle side.. but my Jeep was on jacks and there was no going back. Same shop did a poison spyder rear bumper for me at the same time and that's perfect. I think they just did a shit job on the springs.

Bedrug, Bedtred etc etc. I don't know why ACC carpet gets mentioned so few times on here. If your mudbogging or 4 wheeling with lots of dirt or sand getting into your Jeep. Then Bedrug/Bedtred may be the better solution. Only because thinner carpet dries out faster if you have to take it out and hose it off.

MEanwhile ACC is a way better deal. ALot thicker. And not as expensive. Unless you opt for the mass back lining. Which isn't a bad deal. But your better served using actual sound deadener and putting the basic ACC carpet in over it. ACC is also oversized just a bit so you can cut it to fit perfectly.

The only mod I regret is I bought one of those cell phone holders that clips into the air vent. What a floppy mess. I'll stick with my suction cup windshield mount. Or I'll save up for a Mob Armor phone mount.

I may regret the $100 I spent on a used Smittybilt SRC tubular rear bumper and tire carrier. I think they're normally around $400. I figured for the savings I could figure out how to fix the rattling tire carrier latch. But we'll see. I can always sell it for what I have into it. Or I may just use the bumper and keep my spare on the tailgate. I like the tubular front bumper that goes along with the back. SO worst case scenario I just go with the bumpers. I read someplace that you can stop the rattling with some sound deadener material in the latch. Again we'll see. I have as of yet not read of anyone loving this tire carrier. The bumpers I see alot. But not so much the tire carrier.

I have spent hundreds of hours trying to explain to folks that one of the easiest ways to ruin a very well performing rig is to put larger tires on it than the wheelbase will support.

Would you mind sharing some guidelines from your experience on that the max tire a particular wheelbase can support?

I would guess it’s something like

TJ/LJ - 35”

JKU - 37”

Gladiator 40”

I am probably way off but these are the sizes I most commonly am seeing people run.

Hmmm doing pretty well so far.

Owning 10 wheels with the wrong backspacing for my application is not ideal.

I think you meant to reply to the guy who bought his Jeep on a credit card, but I generally agree with your 2 rules.

I regret thinking I needed a swing-out tire carrier. After much research I bought a RockHard 4x4 unit. It is a nice carrier and made well, but it is very heavy, I think around 130 pounds. I also bought a M.O.R.E. engine skid plate. I wish I had gone with an aluminum one instead of the steel one. The steel one is very heavy!

I regretted drilling a hole in my front track bar bracket to use a stock track bar with a lift. Buying a HP 30 (and parting out the stuff I didn't need and selling the LP30) ended up being cheaper than replacing that bracket.

I regret buying Rough Country lower control arms; though I haven't really suffered any from it, the joints are pretty loose at 15k miles. Should have ponied up an extra $200 for Savvy.

I regret doing a motor mount lift. It didn't really hurt anything, but it didn't allow me to get rid of my transfer case drop like I'd hoped so it ended up just being a bunch of work for nothing.

I regret getting cute and swapping out the 2” BB the PO had installed for new 2” bds springs. I did gain more lift but also gained some new driveline vibes that I never had previously.

I also regret installing an aftermarket EAG bumper. But luckily that didn’t last long and I removed it after a couple weeks and returned it back to amazon. I realized that I prefer a more stock look.

Even though I’m completely satisfied with my powertrax no slip locker, sometimes I regret not spending for a selectable locker in the front when I got regeared.
