Jimmy Buffett passed away

Was hoping we had a thread on this.

Jimmy was always a staple on the radio growing up.

If Bruce Springsteen was the voice of guys hopping up cars, Jimmy was the voice to the crowd that loved the beach life.

For some reason country music adopted him the last couple of decades.

Jimmy was fairly original, and if anything was considered an advocate of having a good time- if getting plastered and passing out on the beach is your idea of a good time.

In one sense he almost created his own category of music.

His biggest hits were novelty songs, but he had a few songs like “He went to Paris “ that were good story songs.

He had a legion of ardent fans that will dearly miss him, and his music will live on.

I did like the fact the he stayed true to what he wanted to sing about. He never tried to be anything but who he was.

Agreed, and you put it very well, better than I could have. One of his best, IMHO, was "Come Monday". There was a time when I bought several of his LPs. When my son and I went to San Carlos, Mexico on a chartered fishing & snorkeling over 20 some years ago I still remember what the captain said as we were leaving the dock: " We got every kind of music there is as long as you like Jimmy Buffet".

Loved that one….watched an old letterman performance of that last night- brought tears to my eyes. Maybe his best song….we have all had a strained relationship (if you have built a Jeep😂).

I wasn’t a parrot head, but I liked him. He smiled a lot. Never got heavy. He spoke to that side of people that wants to skip work, let the rent ride and buy beer with the money.

His financial success was really beyond belief for a professional musician. 50-100 million is a pretty good number for most. That speaks to him hitting a vein with so many people.

I was never the kind of fan to go to a concert or buy his music but I have a Margaritaville station on Pandora for summertime outdoor relaxation.

Dusty Slay has a pretty good bit where he analyzes "It's 5 o clock somewhere" line by line. I realize it's not purely a Buffett song but his comments when Buffett joins the song had me in stitches.

He wrote a book called ‘Where is Joe Merchant’. I really liked it. Like his music, just kick back with your favorite drink & enjoy it.

I was trying to think of the book he did that I read- It was pretty personal and autobiographical -

I think one thing we always gathered was this guy was a lot of what he sang about....He was the guy looking for the salt shaker.

I can’t think of any artist whose music was more of a reflection of who he was.

Whenever he'd come here to Cincinnati, he would sell out two shows. People would start partying at 6 or 7am day of the concert. I never really got the whole vibe, not really my thing, but people sure loved going! He had a cash cow with those couple of songs!

You know I was not a parrot head and never will be but thought I would take a little bit of time this past week and just listen some and take a look at his career-

I guess I’m a little bit fascinated by musicians and certainly thought that was just the ultimate vocation when I was young-

I came to this conclusion-

I’m not sure if Jimmy had a serious bone in his body-

I’m pretty convinced that he was exactly the person that he presented himself to be- a carefree beach loving guy who loved to have a good time-it wasn’t a brand, it was him.

The more that I really looked at his life, he was just massively successful - while doing what would typically insure failure.

I think that one of the things that really can endear an artist is when people love the person as much as they do the music- I think a lot of us envied him for having the courage to follow his own star.

Basically he figured out how to make a living singing about and getting to do so much of what many of us work all the time to get to do one week year- hang out on the beach and relax.

I’m not going to say he was a moral example for anybody. He once said that he was not the greatest musician around but he was always good working an audience- and he was. He was definitely smart enough to have some really talented people around him like Mac McAnally.

I’m sad he is gone, he always made me smile and sometimes could help you slip
away to that beach - Even if you were just doing it in your head on the way home from work.

Not sure I can find the words, but he was character and I’m glad he was on the soundtrack some these past decades.
