Jeeps are shit

283sK on my 99 Tacoma. I'v owned it over twenty years. Two fuel pumps only. Five batteries, Ten sets tires. When I read other Wrangler forums about those newer ones I can't believe the very serious issues. Those engine problems could bankrupt a poor family.
holy shit  that thing eats a set of tires every 28k miles ? ever hear of a front end alignment, ball joints or bearings ? or are you buying used maypop tires ?

I'v been getting about 30,000 miles or less on BFG K2's. Florida heat, and shell impregnated roads. I do get about two years out of these. Especially the last seven years. I think/know they have changed something.

I've had a couple people mention KO2s not lasting very long, particularly compared to the KO. I put 20k on mine and then sold them with 50%ish tread remaining so I think I could have got 40k if I took them to the wear bars.

As someone who has owned numerous solid axle Land Cruisers and Jeeps, you can't compare the two evenly. The Land Cruisers are almost bullet proof from the factory. The transmissions, gear driven transfer case, and 9" like rears could stand up to significant abuse, including dropping in a powerful V8. The 4.2L tractor motor was equally indestructible. Their down side was they couldn't flex and rode like crap.

On the flip side, you have to spend a boat load of money on a Jeep (TJ/LJ) to make them as bullet proof. This is where I agree 100% with Blaine, i.e Jeeps are shit. If they weren't we all wouldn't be spending tons of money to make them less shitty. In spite of that, I drive a Jeep. I'm not sure I can say exactly why, other than there is something uniquely American about them. It also doesn't hurt that they are exactly the right size and the coil springs open up a world of possibilities for improving performance and ride!

After all this talk about shit, I'm worried about a head gasket problem. My 99 TJ 2.5 is mechanically very nice, but I have been reading horrendous stories of antifreeze in oil. Is it inevitable for the top end to go. I'm fairly new to jeeps, and I love this thing. 140K Well maintained

I have owned and driven a Jeep (or two) since 1978. Why?
1. Eisenhower wrote that the jeep was “one of the six most vital” U.S. vehicles to win the war.
2. The tops comes off, by design!
3. Same with the doors.
4. They can go anywhere.
5. They can help other people who get stuck.
6. They go up & down mountains, across deserts, and through streams.
7. If you don't like its configuration, you can change it and your Jeep will still love you.
8. You can tow stuff (not much!).
9. You can work on them yourself, without a computer and a room full of 'special' tools.
10. They are half SAE and half metric, so you can tell your wife you need both sets.
11. The quality and price of dealership maintenance is sufficient justification to buy lots of tools.
12. Everybody that sees you driving your Jeep, with the top down, radio rockin', and doors off, wants a Jeep.
13. They are just so much fun!
