Is This Frame Too Rusty?

Plenty of $20-30 cam scopes available that connect to your phone that you can run down the interior of the frame.

That data combined with some hammer tests will answer your question on depth of the damage.

^ Damn, that is crazy.

Once you look like the pics in the OP that's what you're headed for in the not so distant future. I've had multiple vehicles that started out with moderate rust and the only thing I was able to do with a lot of work was buy some time. Now what the guy in that video did will hold up for a long time. But I wouldn't want to be the guy paying for all that. Even if he got the Jeep at a deep discount he's now into it for more than it's worth, and there's still tons of rust under there.

Harbor freight has some decent migs in the as-is section from time to time.
I'm debating either buying a harbor freight welder/keep weep watching facebook marketplace for a used one to pop up to learn on. Eventually I'd probably replace it with a good one, but for learning/small things even just welding nuts onto bolts I had to cut heads off of it seems like a cheap one would be a good idea

But I already have so many things to put my money towards on this thing, my part time minimum wage job might not let me do that

I hear you. With an almost 7yo and a divorce pending funds are limited as hell! I just saw one of those 110 migs at harbor freight for $80 plus tax in the as-is section. Always check the section for goodies and missing parts

The Chicago Electric 220 volt flux/mig has worked out well for me. 1st thing to do is ditch the harborfreight flux wire it comes with or use it to practice with.

Looking through that post...I noticed a picture. Anyone else know what the pokey things are sticking up out of the cross member? That would suck to pay the big bucks for a blasted and painted frame, then have to figure out how to remove the shock bolts with undoing all that work.

i IM'd the guy and asked flat out and he did reply honestly. stating that those had indeed broken off and been left in there, but he assures me the frame is solid, so i assume it's as is. so ya that'd be a bitch of a surprise to find on something supposed to be reconditioned and clean.

good call.

Buying time is exactly what you're doing. I'm putting a new tub on mine, and just hoping the frame lasts me a couple years, but I'm fully aware that safety caps, or welding in new tubes, or just replacing the frame is in my future. At this point, this is "my" jeep. Its the ONE I wanted and the things I don't like about it, I'm ok changing. It will probably be with me forever...or at least until the jeep bug runs its course.

For sure. I used to stop by weekly, with the 'rona, things have changed and I go maybe once a month. Unless I need tools right away. These are not going to be heirloom tools, but they will help you get the job done a few times.

I recently got their daytona floorjack, a creeper, a small central pneumatic pancake compressor, and a few other little things. Definitely not bad for the price. I was also thinking of picking up one of their buffers, but figured I'd take care of the more important stuff on my jeep first before I work on getting nice paint

For sure. I bought one about ten years ago to get work done on the lowered GLI my kid's mom had and my Audi. Still have it and works like a charm.

Look for Porter Cable orbital on amazon. I purchased a refurbished unit for half the price and it was well worth it. have used it for polishing as well as cutting rough finishes.
