IPhone 14 or Inreach?

I’m going to trade in my iPhone 13 Pro for the 14 Pro. I’ve been waiting for this as it will allow me to have one device as oppose to multiple devices. Plus there’s no need for another subscription with the Inreach.

Doesn't seem like it's a good replacement yet. The ease of hitting the SOS button on the inreach isn't there on the iphone.

And what about emergency rescue service, will they offer that?

It's still a bit early to say exactly what it can and cannot do. The only thing I saw for certain, is it might not have the personal messaging that the inreach can allow. I would imagine that it would have ease of emergency that the current iphone does, meaning a long or repeated press of the side button will bring up the option.

It depends on how you operate, but I like the dedicated device as it's more robust and protected than an iPhone in the event of a fall.

Agree it's too early. I like where it's going though.

In reading a several of the inreach monthly emails where they talk about saving someone, many times hitting the button is all those people are able to do. Hit a button and wait for the helicopter to come. Pointing at the right spot in the sky and taking a test isn't always possible.

I'd like to know more about how and who it contacts too.

I have a feeling much of the additional satellites are there for some additional data harvesting. Maybe I'm being a bit pessimistic, but it's a little strange coming out with stuff no one asked for and skimping on stuff people asked for?

Either way I've gotten sucked into the Apple ecosystem and plan to finally go with an iPhone, particularly the Pro Max. The 14 looks interesting and with the video stabilization I figure this will be even more handy than my gopro and my current phone has a HORRIBLE camera and it's laggy and doesn't work well with most apps, though it got so much stuff right, that I'm thinking of trying to somehow find a backup use for it.

I'm a bit interest in backup storage for the iPhone, since I'm still used to having high capacity SD cards I can swap out, but just having the ease to get to photos and videos is a HUGE plus for me. And I assume I can share video and stuff with various apple products and work uses iPads for the guys in the field, though maybe I should pretend like that doesn't work on my phone.

Buy the most storage you can afford. Other than having to pay the premium for apple's storage pricing, I've never seen a real downside. I suppose you can expand an Android with 2TB on an SD chip but 1TB internal phone storage should be good enough. Many of the phones I've seen with expandable memory slots limit how much the chip can be anyways, so that route isn't always perfect. I do think you end up with better hardware having built in storage and I believe that is more the reason why Apple does built in storage. They can give you M.2/NVM.e level of hardware for your storage which is as good as a fast computer uses.

For cloud stuff you can buy iCloud storage for 200GB at $3 a month or 2TB at $10 a month. You can set the phone to keep all photos/videos local or in the cloud and less quality versions on the phone, which will then access the full quality cloud versions when needed. Personally I just buy the biggest storage phone I can, keep everything full quality on the phone and then let iCloud be the backup spot that holds it all for me. Really nice thing about iCloud is for other devices like Mac or iPad, all your pics and vids are always there ready to go. Plus from a PC I can go to iCloud.com and access my stuff there as well.

I checked my current phone and internally I've got 64gb and 128 gb SD card. Between the 2 I've used about 128 gb. Typically with my gopro/cameras/drone, I run 32gb or 64gb SD cards and focus on backing those up since I've had many SD card failures and I try to use high quality cards but find that more seem to be more reliable than fewer larger capacity ones.

The 1 TB is pretty incredibly priced IMO, but the 256 GB seems to be a more rational size, but I'll need to use some discretion in backing up stuff. I have a bunch of SSDs and various hard drives around, so I'm curious if I can do an external drive somehow of a couple TB or something. Of course that's only going to be an issue in the field and I just don't see myself filling up that many GB on a weekend where I'm not going to have the MBP and external drives and no cloud storage. I currently have great coverage with my current phone, but I don't know if it's my phone or my service. I seem to always have better service than everyone else and my phone is built for emergencies rather than as a smart phone. In any case I'm around a lot of places with limited service so I do try to plan to have no coverage for weekends and the occasional working vacation.

I don't think any of the new androids have card slots anymore....

I haven't been android in a bit. I went with a Sonim XP8 last time and it had the removeable battery and SD card slot and lots of physical buttons which is mostly good IMO, but occasionally bad.

My step dad has the new Android, I think it's 22 now, but I think my last one was a 7 or 8. Really it's just the ecosystem that I'm basically invested in now, so I'm going that direction at that point, just kind of wish things were a bit different.

I'm also getting tired of constantly messing with apps and programs and some hardware and figuring out how to make it work right and I'm just so tired of Windows. In many ways I wouldn't mind Linux, but I don't remember/know how to do so much anymore that's it's a nightmare for me that 1 or 2 times a year where I have to do something that's not straightforward for someone that hasn't used Linux very much in decade(s), I get miserably stuck at times when I don't have the time to waste messing with some program. I did have to spend several hrs with Apple when I first got my MBP, but it's been trouble free since. Occasionally I've had some issues with hard drives showing up right as well for Apple, but not in quite a while.

Meh, I'll wait until someone on Android does it better. I'm no fan of Google but at least it's usable. My wife got an Android phone recently because I finally told her I wasn't gonna be her tech support if she got another iphone.

I’m amazed she needs more tech support on iPhone than android.

I haven't had to help her since the first few days of getting used to the OS.

Meanwhile, her iPhone still has photos on it that I can't get because it only stays accessible via USB cable for about 30 seconds at a time when connected to a PC. Total dumpster fire and I refuse to touch it again.

Well I just pre-ordered the Pro Max and we got my mom the Pro mostly because of the color. It's an ecosystem that does suck you in and for the longest time I had held out on even smartphones, but now I've finally gone full Apple, except the watch. I hope my wife doesn't get me the new watch. I really like my Garmin, but I'll have to enjoy it if she gets me one. I think we're talking about getting Ebikes, so that's probably too expensive to also get a watch.

I kinda hate it, but I can't fight everything, so I'm just gonna be excited for what it is.

I had been occasionally thinking of something like an inreach. A buddy went with a sat phone, but I'm interested in this new feature and how it'll work.

I really like my Apple Watch works so well with my iPhone.
