When I first bought the Jeep about every 10 starts or so it would have a hard time starting like half the engine was misfiring. It would sputter and die then it would usually clear up on the next start. Sometimes it would fire the check engine light and sometime it wouldn't. Well this week it has become much more abundant. About every other start. Yesterday for the first time. It sputtered and died at the end of my drive, not during start up. The auto parts store ran the diagnostic and got a P0340 "Cam shaft position sensor" (bank 1 or single sensor). Upon searching I find their are many things that can cause this. Before I jump into the replacing parts till it goes away fiasco. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this with their TJs and what fixed it?

It likely is the CPS. However, whatever you do (and please, please, please listen to this advice), replace it with an OE Mopar sensor.

Anything but an OE Mopar sensor will just cause more issues.

If you want to test the sensor, I believe in the FSM there is a procedure for testing it to determine if it is indeed bad.

Great I'll order it on the OEM website. Just a quick question do I have to pull everything. Gear and all. Or just the cap on the top with the two screws holding it on. It looks pretty complicated if I pull the gear and all. As far as getting it back in on on the Compression stroke and TDC and Oil pump at 11 o'clock. If it's just the electronic cap with the two screws. I've got that all day.

It was the Cam Shaft Position sensor. I ordered the "Mopar" Branded Part off of Amazon. It was a quick and easy install. Just 2 screws, replace the cap and plug it back in. I have 160 miles on the new CPS and all start ups have been perfect. Fixed!! Below is a link to the specific CPS I ordered and installed.
*Note: this is for the 2000 TJ that has the fuel rail. Check yours to make sure it's the correct CPS for your year TJ. It is a different CPS for different years. Thank you everyone!
