My annual trip to about a half hour west of Glenwood springs canyon to my aunts for a week may turn into a 3-5 hour detour based on traffic or a mudslide warning. evidently this occurred on Thursday. People spent the night in their cars overnight, Highways still closed to traffic about 4 days later and the current route advises a detour of a few extra hours. Motorist spent night in a highway tunnel after mudslide
I know its becoming more and more common out there for mudslides to occur. last year there was a fire in this area and theres no longer any vegetation to hold the loose soil back. I believe the source of the fire was blamed on a sparking tire rim. I-70's basically the main drag from east to west and west to east... essentially if your going through Colorado your more than likely to travel through this area.
Last year and prior this area was beautiful as seen in my video below.
I feel bad for alot of you locals that need to put up with this weekly or monthly. its gotta be pretty tough to get around... though its kinda expected as a local out that way that sometimes you got to wait a few days to get through due to snow, ice, accidents, rock falls, mudslides or other anyhow. with the fire last year that just made it that much worse.
Last year I had made a run to Four Dogs fine wines & spirits in Basalt (which is a pretty top notch liquor store I might add) and got held up in traffic around Carbondale for about a hour from a minor mudslide after a quick sudden rain waiting on the road crews to clear the sludge from the road on my way back to home base. these mudslides are pretty serious and sudden.
