Newby here (if you can consider a 74 year old a newby). Wanted to join this forum since I just purchased a pre-owned 2000 Wrangler Sport. Also, after reading the "about" section of the forum I was impressed with Chris' dedication to both the forum and his religious convictions. Looking forward to participating here.

So the Jeep. I bought it off the 'net from a local independent dealer, and did what research I could, which wasn't much since it came with absolutely no documentation. I did get to meet with the nearby shop that did the inspection and oil change on it before it was offered for sale and they felt it was in pretty good shape for a 25 year old vehicle. It had 178K plus miles on it, and the body and interior were in very good condition (a couple of small tears and cracks inside but nothing too bad) and I was impressed with the ride. It rode great with no wandering and the engine seemed strong. A few rattles here and there but I guess that's to be expected. It appears to be in stock condition, although someone along the line added larger tires, 31X10.5R15 to replace the stock 30X9.5R15 tires. Interestingly, they left one of the original sized tires on the spare holder.

Now for the surprise- I had a local shop check the frame out and what I thought what was mainly surface rust turned out to be a bit more than that. So much so that I'll be paying about 3/4 the price of the purchase price for the repair. Ouch! So now I'll have a 25 year old Jeep costing me around $14-$15 thousand dollars. Looking on the web that doesn't seem too unreasonable (please don't tell me otherwise!) so there you are. Of course I could have bought a newer Jeep for that amount, but didn't want a newer one- too much silly and for me useless technology. I'm old school and want button and levers you can push and pull to get things going.

Anyway, looking forward to being here and learning more about these TJ's.

I have the same year and model as yours. Fortunately I have no rust but I did have to replace the cylinder head shortly after buying it. 2000 and 2001 4.0s have a notorious "weak" head that is susceptible to cracking between #3 & #4 (right where the oil fill cap is). Mine also had 31s and aftermarket wheels which I changed to factory Ravines and back to 30" tires. I'm retired age also and do all my own work. I tow the TJ behind a small motorhome.

I wouldn't worry too much about how much you're spending as long as you can afford it, these are our toys, our investments in fun, and who is counting anyway? It didn't take long for me to spend more than you're talking about. Is yours manual or auto? BTW we need to see some pics.

Welcome to the wrangler tj forum. Great to have you on board. There is a large data base for just about anything tj related. The search engine can be very helpful.

I already used the link in the Resources section to track down my build sheet. That's pretty cool.

I read somewhere on the 'net that with 31" tires you would ideally change the gearing. Mine came with the 3.07 rear end and I doubt they bothered to change it (I'll have to check). It still drives nice and I don't notice any rubbing and I won't be doing anything too outrageous off-road so I think I'm OK. Here's a picture of the Jeep from the sales listing.

Ah, mine has 3.73 gears and a Dana 44. It was plenty peppy with the 31s but even more so with the 30's. The PO had also put the 31s on 10" wide wheels and added Dumbo ears fenders and running boards. Threw all that away and all back to stock now and I like the way it drives and tows.

Welcome to the group from the Island of Long, My name is Johnny & i'm a JEEPAHOLIC :)

Doesn't appear the shop that that did the oil change & "INSPECTION" knew what they were doing, let alone anything about Jeeps !!!
Wondering if there is that much rust to the frame, how did it even pass inspection ??? Might want to dig a lil further..................

You may be right. That particular shop was near the place where I bought the Jeep and I just wanted some feedback. It's quite a drive out there so I found a place closer to me that I'll be checking out, they have a good reputation and I'll see how they do with Jeeps. As for the rust, the work being done is extensive and most of the cost is labor, but this shop also has a good (great really) reputation. They seem to be very thorough and said when finished the frame should be as strong and probably stronger than it would be if it never rusted. It's a custom metal shop that will be doing a fair amount of cleanup, welding repairs with reinforcement pieces they're ordering and finishing up with rust arrestor and paint. I'm looking forward to it.

By the way, I'm from the Island myself, Westbury specifically.

If the shop hasn't started the repairs yet price out getting a frame shipped from an online junkyard network and what a shop would want to frame swap. A rust repaired frame is still rusty. Unless they fix it,acid dip it and then paint dip it
