Gears and lockers

Not to throw things out into the weeds further, but every Dodge with a Cummins that I've ever driven ran 70 just under the 1,500 RPM range. Ironically that's also where most were rated for peak torque. Seem like the Ford diesels did similar. I don't believe in coincidence.

An aerodynamic brick like a lifted tj that also has high rolling resistance from the typical larger mt/at tires is going to need cruise shifted towards peak torque even more than stock.

Stock rubicons(or anything) aren't a useful reference for gearing.3k at 75 isn't excessive. It takes a lot of power to keep a lifted tj at 75

I wonder how much of these conversations partially stem from people that are afraid of RPMs in general and think 3-3.5k is "too high to be safe" for sustained highway cruising

I think that's probably part of it. So you are on 33s with 5.13s correct? Did your mileage change?

I started out at 3.07 on 31s. Got 14.5 MPG (My driving is a mixture of country roads and town).
Then 33s with 4.11 and got 13.5.
Then did a 4.6 stroker and dropped to 13.
Then 35s with 4.11 and got 12.5.
Now, with 5.13 and 35s I'm back at 13.5.

My point is the mileage does, and pretty much always has, suck. I mean, my 8000#, 1 ton, 4x4, diesel pickup just got back from a 900 mile trip going 80 and got 20. BUT, 5.13 and 35s (which is similar to the rec OP is getting for 4.88 with 33s) is by far my favorite combo. Really wakes the rig up and I highly recommend it.

Yes that's correct (not rolling diameter of 33" tho) and no my mileage didn't change. Still seems to range from 9-13ish, typically closer to 13. But yeah like you said it is way more enjoyable to drive. Gears feel closer together, can use 5th, can maintain speed up hills, etc.

4.88 with the nv3550 pushing 33s is the best combination mine has ever had for drivability. And I routinely got 16-17mpg over those 100k+ miles.

5.38 and the 42rle pushing 35s always felt a bit sluggish until the supercharger. My recent trip in and out of Moab got well into the 15mpg range. Even now, 5.89 would be nicer by bringing it closer to 3k at 75.

Thanks for that. I was just thinking about asking you how the stroker and then the 35s affected your mileage!
