Hey there!
As I’m getting closer to completing my Wrangler, I’m wondering the proper procedure for first start-up and break-in. I’ve read couple of threads and check the Haynes manual about this and I’ve come across multiple different methods and I’ve came to this conclusion:
First start up:

Use 10w-30 break-in oil (Royal Purple), start engine and run for 20 minutes at 2k rpms.

Then, change oil to 10w-30 conventional. For 500 miles, drive with full throttle 30-50mph and let it slow down to 30mph and repeat for 12 times. (No sustained high speeds)

Then after 500-600 miles change oil and drive few hundred miles normally, and after 2000-5000 miles change oil.

Break-in done.

I’ll like to know if this is the most correct way and what y’all think.

Looks good. I would start by pulling the distributor and priming the oil system with an old distributor that has the teeth ground off the drive gear.Pull off the rotor and chuck it up in a drill to spin the oil pump til you have oil coming out of all the pushrod holes.spin it the direction the rotor would turn for the firing order.a cut up flathead screwdriver or app specific tool can be used as well.i would use comp cams or brad penn break in oil instead if it was me and i would vary the rpms a little bit around the 2k mark for 20 min.

If this is a reman with a warranty i would follow their directions to the letter and video the entire process as a way to cover your ass.

If you reach out to the manufacturer I am sure they would assist you in getting a fresh copy.

I too would vary the rpm during the first 20 minutes… 2000 rpm would be my minimum and run up to 3000 or so. Drain oil when it’s hot, pull filter and then do your driving. Keep the rpm’s up still for the most part. The reduced zinc content of todays oils can ruin a camshaft quickly if you re not flinging oil around from ample rpm’s !!

Good luck
