Donor Jeep

I have a 2002 TJ that I would like to swap my manual transmission to an auto.

A local dealership has a 2002 with a hard top and automatic transmission for sale. About 130k miles and looks stock and probably frame rust.

They have it listed for 6k but wondering what yall think they would take. I’ll probably low ball them.

If you can buy it for less...I'd offer them $3k. You can probably recoup all your money parting out the rest.

Is that donor a 2.4? I don't see the 4.0 sticker... transmission might have less clutches.

The 30Rh won’t bolt into a 6cyl, nor can you do the reverse. Bellhousing are different, so make sure what you’re buying will match what you’ve got. There are other things to consider when doing the swap (computer comes to mind), so hopefully you’ve already read up on this.

But there is (within the bounds of error) 0% chance a dealer is going to drop the price that significantly, so I’d be working on a plan B to source your auto trans.

I’ve seen varying number of clutches in the direct drum, enough to just say when it comes to knowing what you’ll find. I’ve also heard that the 30rh had a weaker planetary, but the 2 I’ve seen both had 4 pinion planets, same as the 32RH. Unless they’re weaker in some other way, idk.

Most other stuff is identical on the inside though.


But maybe I don’t even know what question I was supposed to be answering.

It has the 4.0 looking at their website and the vin decoder.

I wouldn’t offer more than 3k I don’t think. I’m guessing the frame looks terrible. That’s the thing, I want to find a jeep that’s like that so I can pull the transmission out
