Do you have a winch? How often do you use it?

So then you should just wheel at the times when a strap will do, and not wheel when it won’t. Great, so any tips on how to identify the times when the strap it is not enough so you can know when to stay home?

I re read his post and Im not sure how you got here 🤷‍♂️

He is basically talking about the same thing you are in post #49

Yep that's Holcomb Creek Middle rock garden.

Is that question a typo, I'm not following?

It's the short section that has the logs that get driven over to reduce tire contact with the natural spring under it.
I and a couple other's used our trail trailers to haul in the logs and rock rubble to help keep the trail open.
I haven't been on Holcomb since 2018 when we move to MT.

Apologies, back on Topic.

I can't live where I do without a winch in the winter. Literally had to call the Utah offroad recovery team when I got 2 vehicles and a skidloader stuck in the driveway. Also have to move some big rocks that fall off the cliff from time to time. We also get random people who drive down our driveway in a 2wd or with bald tires and get stuck. Every year I've not had one, I wish I did. Every year I did have one, it got used at least once.

Here is one of the rocks I've had to move. This one blocked the driveway for everyone except the little Samurai. Man I love that thing.

Fabricated this yesterday. Going to hang it on a high line to hoist RV parts up a steep embankment.

I'm puzzled how you jumped to that conclusion from what I wrote.

My point was that if your buddy is in front of you and gets high centered on a rock, then you use your winch to tug him a few inches back: You didn't 'need' a winch. You could've just used a strap. Sure, the winch might have been more convenient because it's bolted to your bumper. Your strap might be buried in your rear storage somewhere like mine.

If the above situation happened to me, I wouldn't be bragging to my friends that I 'needed' to use my winch for a recovery. Need implies a strap wouldn't work. For example, if your friend ended up off the side of a cliff flopped on his side, a winch would be more appropriate.

I agree a winch, recovery strap and kinetic rope all have their specific uses. Even a shovel is better in some cases. I’ve been wheeling since 91 and never specifically needed a winch. PO of my 05 installed a winch. I’ve used it several times and never for vehicle recovery. I’m glad I have it because there will be a time when it’s the best tool to use for a recovery.

Well this is going on a high line and we're hoping we can hoist RV parts up, and then haul the trolley up the hill to the dump trailer with another winch.

Really steep embankment littered with big chunks of RV. Would be less impact if we can get them whole.

Sorry King. Somehow I missed the nuance. No offense intended.

Yep, except for our very own “suicideking,” there are no kings in America. We have a much different form of government.

And here's the next episode.

This entire system needs improvement. For one I needed the high line up at least another 10-12 feet up in the uphill tree and probably the downhill.

I need a captive pulley on the prussic on the high line that redirects the dump trailer winch...that line ran the trolley up and down the high line and kept slipping off...I used a recovery ring...it was what I had.

If you have a winch - In a normal year, how often do you use it?

Daily?
Weekly?
Monthly?

Currently have a Warn 9500ti, and i’m thinking about downsizing to something smalller/cheaper like a Warn M8000-s, or potentially running without one and adding back a set of MaxTrax instead for desert work.

I’ve had a winch on the past handful of 4x4’s we own and i have to say, i’ve never used one off-road even with lots of trail time in Pismo, Moab, Anza-borrego, and several 7-8+/10 socal trails under our belt.

On our last rig the biggest use was to do work around our place, moving trees/logs, etc. a couple years ago after a big storm.

Can of worms topic like running a spare tire vs. carrying tire/wheel stem patch kits, i know, but i’m interested in what works for you in your area?

I would say our rig is very well built/capable(TJR, longarm’d, armored, etc) and our intent is to stick to 5/10 or less trails, BUT we usually DO run solo or with one other mildly built rig, so trying determine our actual needs.

I Grew up in rural oregon, and the mud there is fierce. Ive been in rural vermont for 6 years now, and the mud season only lasts one month, its great, hah. My wife is not real confident on icy roads, so im building the redneck version of one of those iceland overland rigs, hah. 31-32's, winch, lots of side slope here, so cant go too tall, its gonna be a log skidder, pulling wind blown sugar maple down the hill to my mill. So a winch is a must, tow pig f550 gin pole truck that i use to drag jeeps out of blackberry patches has a worm gear winch on front bumper, and a hardly frightening 12k winch on the back, going to the the gin pole setup.

$1000 04 tj got a $20 warn winch plate, gonna throw the 12k harbor freight on it for now, but will be on the prowl for something lighter, its just gotta pull a subaru out of the ditch once a month, give my wife confidence she can self rescue, and winch heavy stuff around the farm for me. Im only 43 but im a little bit broke down from M.S. and working the trades since i was 13, hah.

I actually used mine 2x on my last tj, in texas, in the big city, they get these flash floods and people try to drive across fast moving water...1x just saved the dude from having expensive tow bill, other kept it from swimming away.

But tl/dr, my offroading mantra has always been, have at least one xtra trick to get out than you got stuck with, could be lockers, airing down, 4x4 low range, traction mats, a winch etc. If you have to use the last resort, you should be using it to get out instead of farther in, but im like 95% solo rig when i go out.

Use the Harbor Freight 9500 and a Black Magic Brakes/Wizard Recovery Gear synthetic rope. I added a $15 wireless remote from Amazon too.

Or find a used Warn...you seem very capable of finding good deals.

Yeah, literally just gonna throw the one i have on there for now, till i find a good deal on something smaller/lighter, to tide me over, cause without heavy equipment on our little farm, if i dont have a winch, I end up hand winching stuff, and tweaking my back, hah. Unless you straddle the cable, you end up hurking on the hamd winch handle side to side, and our backs arent as strong that way, i herniated a disc using one about 10 years ago, and plan to not repeat that, hah.

I just saw an 8274 for 5 hundy beans last night, just making sure i dont discover any additional previous owner deffered maintenance before I piss away all my limited funds hah. Doing a clutch job in the snow, see pic, hah. Seller said the clutch pedal just got no resistance all of a sudden, which sounded like a clutch fork pivot ball clip fail, but it turned out to be a pivot ball fail, foud it mangled in bottom of bell housing. Flywheel teeth look fine, but im gonna finish pulling trans to verify everything is gtg. I got a luk clutch for $88, will prob throw that in for good luck, but if i was really trying to show off with an ultra cheap build, id return it, hah. Kid did get the rear main seal in right, no drips, which i think of as harder than getting that pivot ball in, but id rather swap that ball than do a rear main seal on my back in the snow, hah.

I'd worry less about a winch until you get rock rails on that poor Jeep. Yikes!
