Dana 44 Rear Diff Oil Help

Hello jeepers, I’m new to the forum. I Just purchased an 04 TJ and I’m changing the Dana 44 differential fluid. The metal tag on the diff cover seems to be different from what the manual says. I won’t be doing any offloading but just want to put the correct fluid in it. Can anyone give me some advice?

Any 80w/90 synthetic will do
It will have all the additives in it

The TJR doesn't need a friction modifier. Therefore I use this least expensive and 5-star rated on Amazon.

The Rubicon rear diff specs the 75W-140 synthetic. No LS additive required as it is a helical gear limited slip, but it won't hurt if the fluid already has the additive.

Did you find the drain plugs in the Rubi diffs, or did you remove the covers?

Ok, thanks everyone. I was confused when the metal tag said 60 oz of 75W140 + 4 oz FM and the manual says something else.

And it's 1qt 12oz in the front and 2.0qt in the rear regardless of any lift or aftermarket diff cover.

I found it but I’m replacing the cover.

I recant my statement. I had squealing coming from either the pinion bearing or wheel bearing. When I added more gear oil the squealing disappeared.

Most people seem to be just fine adding the usual 2 quarts, but that means filling it to above the fill hole because the fill hole rotates into a lower position. are you saying you had to add more than 2 quarts, or you had to fill to a level above the fill hole?

The hole is definitely lower when the axle is tilted. So, I jacked the jeep up by the pumpkin as far as I could with a floor jack then filled the same hole until it ran out. It definitely took in an additional amount before spilling out.. All squeaking stopped while driving thereafter..

Follow the manual.

80w-90 is fine if you don’t tow. If you occasionally tow use 75w-140.
