Custom Phone Holder Build

@Zorba is blessed even to be mentioned in this thread.

P.s. I’m done with phone mounts. Wireless Apple CarPlay. Cheers to @Zorba

FWIW, I still use my phone mount even when the phone isn't plugged into power.

How do you plan to store and power your phone while it's wirelessly connected to the head unit?

@Apparition too.

Mostly I’ll store my phone in my pocket since the apps I’ll need will be on the head unit screen. I can use OnX, Google Maps, and Pandora among others. Those are the main apps I use in the Jeep.

My power solution is a setup from Powerwerx. I’ve got a switch for power, a USB, USB-C, 12 V plug, and a Voltmeter. As a backup I can always use the cigarette lighter plug, but I prefer not to use anything in that area with wires.

This is what works for me, but it won’t work for everybody. It definitely won’t work for @Zorba!

Good choice on the XAV series.

I went for the XAV-6000 but almost went for the 9000. However, the far superior sound quality of the 9000 would not be distinguishable in a TJ without an immense amount of sound deadening and new speaker locations and speakers which is not what this Jeep is built for. Further, the warranty is three years for both units, so there were no added benefits going with the better unit that I would use. The CarPlay tech is the same. 6.2 second wireless connectivity. I’m looking forward to seeing it in dash. Hopefully make life much more than bearable in the TJ.
These units look very pleasing in a TJ.

What you have is very good. 9000 series is the top dog and I recommended it to someone else recently.

I went a different direction with mine given my uses and preferences but I read about all the latest models and Sony was easily the pick for me compared to even Pioneer NEX line.

I could use my phone with my XAV but I prefer the apps like OnX up higher and closer to the steering wheel nearer my line of sight in the 67 designs mount, sideways not vertical. I have both the connector for the radio and USB power options on top of the dash and usually run the power only cord and use the phone for navigation.

I want to see your setup in Moab.

I’ll see if I like having everything in dash and out of the way. Right now I don’t like any of the low profile phone mounts I’ve used. Mostly I’m just tired of taking my phone out of my pocket.

I was hoping the 90* bend might also be part of the issue (beyond the location), but I'm not surprised it's not. After double checking, my setup also hinges at the dash...just not as much since there is less weight on the end of a shorter lever.

Your bracket looks nice and helps me realize that could upgrade from what I have.

I think that is version 3 or 4. I went up in thickness till it wasn't the problem. .125" is pretty stiff on something that small.

@Zorba , my goddess this technology is wonderful. Embrace it you should 🙃

Here’s the only pic I can find of mine. I now have the winch controller up there also. I run everything lower now and I’m not sure if that’s my pro max. But sure it’ll be in Moab in all its dusty glory.

Been very happy with the head unit (imo, the XAV line currently offers the best combination of function and form).

The phone holder has worked well enough for on-road use for about 3 years. It would function better if the bottom left corner was supported.

That is exactly where I had my phone mounted before, except vertical. And I have a deeper dish dash tray for sunglasses. Lightning charger cable router from cigarette socket behind dash to just behind the phone.

I did not like that position for phone holder since it forces you to take your eyes off the road and focus on the phone for example with GPS. I have the same complaint with center console navigation though the bigger screen size is better than phone. Most modern cars have it this way with the screen mounted high .. imo they are doing so due to lack of a better way of integrating all the controls they do and not because it's the best option.

I think a phone mounted near the A pillar on the left is a more natural position to use. The mount that Blaine built for my orange Jeep is super good.

This is the main reason for why my ECT, Transmission (temp), IATs, and Boost pressure gauges are in the lower A-pilar area. Your setup is very nice.

My eyes agree. OEM head unit screens many times look like an afterthought (like a tablet protruding up/out of the dash). I assume the major car manufacturers would do it a better way if they practically could (accounting for variables such as safety concerns and costs...etc.).

Side note: I added my dash photo mainly so I could subtly send JMT my love. I hope he gets my message.

Recently lost a client and friend who was a huge Todd Rundgren fan- I built him this showcase for his CD collection.

Back on track I love my XAV set up to live stream my iphone into - took some work but paid off.

@Plumber1 please get this pervert away from your trade.

Well now @AndyG when your from a small town you have to improvise best you can. I have traveled the county a bit and know that in a lot of rustic ( Hillbilly ) areas they have different ways of doing things then we city folk do. But I unlike you would never make fun a guy trying to improve himself.

When I googled fun things to do in Blue Ridge I got this

Blue Ridge GA
Population: 1,233 (2023)
Area: 2.2 mi²

Blue Ridge, Georgia - Wikipedia

AND the number #1 thing to do was

1. GET AWAY COMPLETELY

Wake up to cool, crisp mornings with a cup of coffee on the porch. After a day of fun and adventure, finish the day in the same spot enjoying a glorious mountain sunset with a glass of wine or sweet iced tea. You may never want to leave the porch, but don’t miss out on the fun of exploring the Georgia mountains

I would be willing to send him this and maybe it would get him on the right path
