help me diag this engine. owner states a loud clicking sound, got louder and louder while on throttle then loss of all power. all on a short drive. turned engine off and unable to restart. has spark, compression and fuel. it will almost start but fails. some times i hear after cranking it one single click sound after trying to start. sounds like a ball bearing falling down. i suspect a skip in timing? but the loud ticking sound and the ball bearing i can't figure out. how can i figure out if the timing is off?

What model year?

What's the fuel pressure? Try cranking and spraying starter fluid in the throttle body.

So it cranks the engine reliably? Just doesn't start?

01 TJ 4.0 manual; this jeep just died coming home. Cranks but refuses to fire now. So far I have replaced 1.fuel pump relay & fuse 2. fuel pump 3.throttle body and all 3 sensors 4. crank shaft position sensor 5. I have power to all injectors 6. I believe I have checked all ground connections. 7. I have checked the relay box for corrosion 8. NO CODES while cranking to start. 9 all of my gauges work. 9. I am going to disconnect the fuel line from the pump and blow it out next. WHAT AM I MISSING?

I'm not sure if I can post this hear. New member. I have been trolling this site when needing help with my 97 jeep wrangler. I'm also having crank no start issue. I was driving and everything just went dead. Got it home and started researching. I don't have a CEL on the dash when I turn the key. I started checking sensors. I have replaced plugs, plug wires,CKP,CMP, ignition coil. I checked for 5v and had 45mv. I did the phone charger to get my 5v and it cranked. I checked for codes. It gave me p340,so that's when I changed the CMP. I went out the next day and tried it again after installing new CMP. Nothing. Crank no start. I have tried for voltage with all sensors unplugged. So I took the PCM out and made up some jumpers and bench tested it. Only 45mv on pin A17. So I'm guessing I need a new PCM? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I agree on a new PCM.... @Wranglerfix www.wranglerfix.com

However me being a cheap bastard I'd probably buy a cheap 12v to 5v convertor, wire it in and get stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere in 8 months when the rest of the PCM decided to die.

That's the thing. I did the 5v convert. It worked once and then it went to shat! I forgot to mention it in my post but the fuel pump never stops running unless I unplug the PCM. I also noticed that when I try to crank it, I lose power on the radio. I stop and the power comes back. I saw a YouTube about the capacitors being replaced. I might try that. Thanks for the response!

Definitely look at the FSM and the ASD relay. Check and verify all your wiring... continuity tests, ohm tests. Deloom and visually inspect the wires.

Odds are pretty good the 20+ year old PCM's capacitors leaked as you mentioned...but...it would be a damn shame to fry a new one because of a wiring issue.

I have done this so for on all the 5v sensors. I have looked over the harness in areas of concern. Looked good. Please let me know if anything looks out of wack. I have a power probe ordered to do some more testing on the ASD. I also have no spark. Checked the ignition coil for ohms, it was bad. Bought a new one and checked it before I left the store! Still have no spark. Being the PCM is in control of that, just another thing pointing me in the direction of a new PCM. I checked for power at the connector for continuity and power. Both were good!

And yes I thought about getting a new wiring harness but dang!

The most common failure in the early jtech ecms are the caps exploding and will cause a crank, no start.
