I will be buying a Crankshaft position sensor tomorrow for a 99 4.0 automatic. I've been told I may need a shim with the automatic since the attachment is one bolt leaving the sensor some what adjustable risking the CPS being pushed in to far causing damage. If the new CPS doesn't have the shim are those bought separately? And how are they applied?

I thought they came with a plastic piece you used as a spacer, tightened it down and removed the spacer.

Kinda like using a book of matches to set your points.

I heard you put it on the buisness end before you place the sensor in the hole. Not sure how you would remove it once in there.

The CPS has a paper sticker on the end that acts as a spacer. I’ve seen theses sold separately but if you’re buying new it should come with one. My understanding is the crank will wear this out over time once installed.

Thanks that's what I was looking for. Gonna check for that before I walk out the parts store(y)

I replaced the one in my 2002 4.0 automatic.

I bought an OEM, and it came with a paper-like spacer of the proper thickness stuck to the end of it to place it at the correct distance from the flywheel. It’ll harmlessly tear away when you start the engine.

It’s simple enough to just drop it in place, and tighten the clamp bolt.

But it sure ain’t easy! It was a major PITA to get to, to get the old one out and the new one in!

Good luck!
