Hello everyone! hate to have my first post on this forum be about a problem but here we are. I have a 97 Wrangler Sport with the 4.0 She has been treating me well up until recently she has been having random idle surges and backfiring randomly. She drives fine until she gets warmed up usually and then she will have fits of backfiring and loss of power. i typically pull over turn her off and back on and shes fine. I've scanned the codes that popped up and I had two of them one of them was an EVAP code in which i replaced the purge valve solenoid and the canister, hoping that fixed it, and the other is the P0132 code. I've replaced both of the O2 sensors to make sure those weren't the problem but it still persists. I'm out of ideas on what it'll be. id usually go to the mass air flow sensor at this point but she doesn't have one. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.

Brand of 02 sensors installed?

Sounds similar when I had a clogged cat any idea if or when it has been replaced?

Bosch O2 sensors generally do not work on our TJ's. They need NTK replacements. NTK recently discontinued our model of o2 sensors but updated them to part number NTK23179.

I just ordered one for my wrangler from sparkplugs.com which is the main distributor for NTK. They are out of stock at the moment but are getting 5 in this week. Might want to place an order to hold your O2 sensors when they arive.

Did you ever figure out what your issue was? I am having same issue mine is a 2000 wrangler 4.0 had CEL on for O2 sensors I replaced both with the proper NTK sensors still have a p0132 code with rough running backfiring and loss of power exactly as you described.
