Purchased a new control unit for my 04 LJ since my OEM knob was broken and the selector not working correctly. Everything plugged in and i used the OEM vacuum hookups but now the circled knob shoots air at my face and the face only position shoots it at my face and feet. They're backwards now. What did i do wrong?

Bought a cheap knockoff part and expected it to work properly
Half joking

What was the problem before with the old one?

I know... I should have overpaid for a discontinued Mopar part.

Prior owner broke off the knob and the piece that controls the air direction/AC.

The way the vacuum was applied to the coloured lines changed between 01 and 02. It's possible the new controls were designed for use with 99-01 systems.

EDIT: Looks like RHD retained the same control unit right through. The RHD HVAC unit remained the same throughout the years with the blower motor accessed behind the battery.
LHD controller changed in 03 when the blower motor moved inside the vehicle. Standard Motor Products HS532 looks like the one you would need for an 03-06 LHD.

I stumbled across this while looking for the replacement knob for my 2004. I assume you have this fixed by now.

My far right AC switch was not 'clicking' into position properly and I could not turn the ac off.

It turns out the plastic knob cracked and would not rotate the metal shaft any more.

It is a $5-$15 fix to just replace the knob. I checked and all 3 have the same orientation for the flat spot (ie any knob fits into any position and works properly)

If you have the old control unit, check the knob and see if it is cracked like mine:
