Busted Ram

The weight capabilities of these trucks are getting to be too much for the average Joe Blow Imaidiot to be driving.

I passed a dumbass on the highway the other day who was in a DRW Ford pulling a skid steer, which was parked as far onto the trailer tongue as it physically could be, riding like this V. I don;t want him pulling anything.

It's like the old guy who's never driven anything larger than a Yugo his whole life and then at 62 retires and goes buys a 45' motorhome. Doesn't need any training or special license to drive it. WTF????

And you figure 600-800 lbs of tongue weight. My sister had a shorter extension on here F350 with her horse trailer with a Torque lift hitch pulling her horse trailer and the rear of the frame twisted where the hitch is mounted. And that's only 2 horses which is lighter than our Jeeps.

That Host Mammoth weighs in over 4000 pounds dry. And what's in that cargo trailer?

What amazes me is he felt it should be repaired buy Ram.

I think I count 10 lug nuts, so that should be at least an F-450?

Yeah. That’s my question too. If a one ton dually isn’t enough, then what is the market?

Class IV & V trucks which are F450 & F550 C&C or Ram 4500 & 5500 C&C or Chevy 4500 & 5500 C&C. But it has to be a C&C truck for the added payload.
Most people get a 5500 or 550 and then add the Liquid Springs to help with the ride.

Are you talking about the truck that broke? But has to be a C&C truck not the detuned F450 they sell as a Class III truck.

If someone just has to have everything on a truck, I found the right truck. MACK DMM

Not following, Ford detunes the engines in the larger trucks. F550 is only 300HP powerstroke.

The F450 with a bed on it is rated as a Class III truck not a Class IV truck so it's detuned in the weight not engine.

Edit: The C&C F450 is a Class IV truck which is the difference.

it’s not really de-anything. They are different offerings.

The F450 with a bed is not a true F450. It isn't a Class IV truck so it's a neutered truck IMO. They do this for insurance and licensing purposes. If you want a true F450 you have to get a C&C.

That’s like saying an F350 SRW is neutered F350 because the F350 DRW has more payload. They are different offerings. Buy accordingly.

But it isn't a true F450. Why call it that when it's rated as a Class III truck?

From everything I've read it really is a Class IV truck but they sell it was a Class III so it has to have the lower payload. It actually has a lower payload than a F350 DRW. But it has bigger wheels & brakes & frame & tighter turning radius due to the wider front axle. You can call it how you want but as they sell it isn't not a true Class IV truck.

Is it being sold as a class IV truck? Nope

My understanding is they have different frames.

I’m starting to see quite a few pickup F450’s running around so they must have found people to buy them.

I think you just went over my head. Yeah, I mean the broken white ford. So the F-450 with a bed is de-rated to be more like a 1 ton? I’ve got a friend with a late model F-450 powestroke. The axles and frame on that thing make my ‘08 Dodge 3500 look kinda puny.

edit: just read the other posts above.

Ford uses the same frame F250 thru F450 pickup. Scroll to bottom of page 57 in the link below to Ford's Body Builder Website. I see a lot of people argue about this but so far I haven't seen anyone provide official documentation to prove otherwise.

I believe the cab and chassis versions use 34” wide frame width and the pickup versions use 37.5”.

The question was asked what truck do you need to haul one of these triple slide campers and the answer is a F450/550 or 4500/5500 C&C. The confusion comes into play with the F450 that Ford sells labeled as a F450 but has a pickup bed.

All the groups I'm on with these campers all say the same thing. You have to get a C&C truck in either a Class IV or V and add a flatbed to it.

If you're talking about the F450 with a bed from the factory I think you're correct but I've never crawled under one to check. The distinction between them is the C&C models which are classified as commercial trucks which is where the PITA comes in for licensing and insurance.

This whole thing comes about because car dealers & RV dealers don't tell the people they are selling to what they'll need to haul or tow the loads they're trying to do. I seriously looked at getting a Class VII or VIII truck to haul my Jeep with and then toy a trailer behind it. I looked at some really nice rigs but in June the prices were still out the roof. They are starting to come down now.

Honestly I've never looked at a F450 frame.

I own a 2022 F450 Pickup. Great tow rig, can't really beat it. But it isn't the Chassis Cab 450 that many think it is, and I've even seen some say it is a 550 with a pickup bed and lighter springs . Same rear springs as the 350 Dually, and yes it does squat with weight in it like the 350 Dually. As far as the Chassis goes, at one time I believed the hype that it was like the 450 Chassis Cab until I found that site I linked to earlier. Definitely says the frames are the same. Now I'd bet there are associated parts on the frame that are only for the 450 pickup use, but base frame they are the same. The truck is rated at 14k GVWR. Go over that and something breaks like what this thread is about, and you'll experience the same warranty denial that is happening with that Ram. Pickup manufacturers are beginning to put onboard scales on these pickups, so getting away with overloading will come to an end soon.

There's a guy on another forum that has that same camper on his new F450. He's done about every mod you can do and he says the ride sucks, because he is about 2500 lbs over the trucks rating.

Insurance wise, I was with AAA since I was 15 1/2 years old. I'm 61 now. AAA wouldn't insure it as they think it's the Chassis Cab and end of discussion with them. I ended up using Geico until about 7 months ago, when we moved to Northeastern Nevada and insured the truck through State Farm.

Another good video explaining what might have happened to this Ram.
