Nearly every thread regarding replacing ball joints references the OTC 7894 adapter kit or using the rental adapters at AutoZone. But.....isn't a tapered adapter needed for the install????? The OTC 7894 adapters I got does not have a tapered adapter (nor does any of the AutoZone rental adapters). The install adapter is flat with no variation. Those of you that got the OTC 7894, is your install adapter tapered?

Yes, a tapered adapter is required. I don’t have the kit you mentioned since I borrowed one, so I can’t help with that aspect.

at one point i took extensive notes and did a ton of research with a friend who worked at AZ. This research is probably 4-6 years old, and my notes are from that time. I'm going to just copy/paste what I wrote then. The biggest challenge of all is that they retire part numbers all the time, so you have to find the cross-reference to the new part #. HTH.

Dana 44 adapters - AZ tool (336)27089
non-standard ball joint kit or (336)27165
Dana 44 adapter kit SKU 695584 ==> 648617T is the one I actually rented from AZ with the tapered adapter

Possible alternative 27163/64/65/66

OTC-7894 has the tapered adapter
