I noticed some oil around the driver side front axle shafts around the yokes. Definitely smells like differential fluid. Im no mechanic but I have all the time in the world to fix this jeep so I'm thinking of giving it a shot. Ive watched a few videos and read a write up on here somewhere about replacing the inner seals. All of them after opening the differential remove the stock carrier. Would that process be the same if I have a detroit auto locker in there instead? Is there anything different i would do or should be aware of?

Spicer seals are the best. And yes a tool like that will make the job a lot easier. Otherwise you’re using a long rod running down the tube with a socket that fits the seal and you’re trying to hammer it in the best you can.

Although probably not absolutely necessary, I found a helper to be very...well...helpful...
One person with his hands in the diff to guide and direct the seal and driving tool, socket or whatever, the other person tapping it in place the long piece of pipe, sawed-off broom handle, or whatever.

I have it all ready to pull the carrier (detroit auto locker) if I grab both sides I can kinda move it a hair but not yank it out. Im probably just being a bit
timid. Any advise? 20250915_143010.jpg

got it. Helps if you remember to pull the passenger shaft out. :ROFLMAO: Im definitely playing the fool on this but hey learning new stuff. I definitely appreciate everybody replying.

I got the seals popped off and noticed a rubber ring around the seals inside the differential. I dont remember that in @Chris write up or any videos I've watched. Any clue what it is? View attachment 643346

I don’t know why yours is white, but that should be the sealant from when the factory pressed the tubes in. It’s always been orange on every axle I’ve seen. It doesn’t need to be touched.

Thanks. It mostly ripped off on the other side. Is that fine. Can I just remove the remainder of it with no ill effect?
