true story: Back '72, my brother had a '64 VW camper, it had a rifle rack in the back drivers side, with two shotguns, a 30-06 and a 22, and the ammo was in a drawer under the sink. We decided to go to the Montreal expo. At the Canadian border, this 'old guy' comes out and says we need to look in the van boys. My brother opened the sliding door, the sink is right there, when you open the door. In the sink was a package or Oreo's. The border guard looks at all the guns and says "awful lot of firepower their fellows, where's the ammo" We are shitting our pants at this point, My brother opens the drawer, and the border guy says, "Oh boy, this is bad, very bad". I thought my brother was going to pass out. The old geezer grabs about a half dozen Oreos, holds them up and proclaims, Loudly "THESE HERE ARE ILLEGAL IN CANADA, AND IM CONFISCATING THEM" at which point he turned and walked away, and with a mouthful of cooky he gabbles "you boys have fun" I just busted out laughing.
Honest to God —- true story, NOW I got to get me one of these freak'n hippy scooters 🤣

I can tell you that by 2004, that same scenario was a bit more scary. I moved up within 10 miles of the border in MN in February 2004. The Canadians didn't mess around with guns in vehicles at the border (especially handguns). I always had them in my vehicles, so border crossings were planned events for me. Impromptu, "hey, let's go to Canada for lunch" wasn't possible.

about 20 years ago I went to cross into Canada through Niagara Falls ( I lived in Rochester NY --and I have a NYS CCW Permit ) when I got to the border, the douche bag border guy was asking me all kinds of questions about ALL MY GUNS? I told him SEVERAL times, "I Like Canada, but I don't want to stay here for the next 5 years" the questioning got so bad I finally said "look, if you think Im stupid enough to bring a firearm into your country, I'll just pull over and you can search the damn car" which he replied "that won't be necessary, have a nice day" My wife thought we were going to jail, because I started getting pissed. LOL That was the last time I went to Canada
It turns out, NYS ties our pistol permits to out Drivers license and registration  so the cops KNOW when they pull you over, you have a permit, and possibly a gun on you

Sitting in Afganistan, I was given a two month notice I was moving to Alaska when we get back to NC.

I knew they didn't like guns,

I don't know they also didn't like high capacity magazines.

So when the border agent asked me if I had any military issued magizines and my answer was "probably not"

Well that went about as well as a silent fart after a dinner of taco bell.

How certain are you that you've got no ammo mags? I don't about 80 % -85%

SIR, You crossed an international border, It is a $10,000 US dollar fine for every magizine we find.

This is with a 22' V nose trailer loaded front to back with house hold items. Mostly garage.

Sir, I'm going to need you to pull into that inspection building

Yup. They are seriously anti-gun these days (that's what the lack of an equivalent to our 2nd Amendment gets you). I shot IDPA matches in Grand Forks, ND when I lived in northern MN. We had two regulars that lived in Canada, just over the border. They had grandfathered permits to just own handguns, and the amount of paperwork that they had to file yearly to keep them was crazy. They had to show proof of marksmanship proficiency and participation in shooting events to keep the permits - every year!

And then there were two monthly border crossings each way to participate! They didn't think it was a big deal, mainly because they'd been acclimated to anti-gun climate up there.

God bless the USA, God bless the 2nd Amendment, and God bless the Patriots that fight to keep that right strong!

I think most states today do that. However, it's generally a good thing. Cops have learned that the vetting process for permits works, and as they approach your vehicle, they have a bit of confidence that you're not a wanted felon. I've gotten out of several speeding tickets in recent years, and I think the permit (along with being very polite) helped.
