Hi everyone.

First, I have to thank the community for the amount I have been able to learn here just lurking for a bit. Clearly there is a lot of specialized experience here. So, I am searching for a TJ series Wrangler — mostly because I have been taken down a rabbit hole by a random decision that my fiancee and I made one day for her to test drive a 2025 2-door Sport. Really peppy I-4T and I was impressed generally, since I am a Toyota guy (4R and Tacoma). She fell in love with the little thing. Also with the electric mojito color (or whatever it's called). We talked about how ever since she watched Daisy Duke in her CJ7, she knew she had to eventually have one. OK, so that's my cue, right?

That said, this would be a very occasional driver — and probably have to replace the '09 Mini S Cabrio I have "rebought" over the last 3 years of ownership. So I am no stranger to finicky vehicles or ones that seem to require a lot of resources and attention. It is a hoot to drive, but that BMW/Peugeot direct-injection engine is difficult to maintain, as is the rest of it. And I cannot do anything with it myself, so I would up paying Mini specialists ($$$). But it's charming in addition to being annoying. So I feel I am well-prepared for Jeep ownership.

In any event, ~$30-35K is a lot for an occasional driver, so I started to research used Wranglers and the various generations. I have now gotten to the point where I have honed in on 2002 as my ideal model year, because I can find the AMC I-6 with the 32RH 3-speed, which sounds much preferred to the 42RLE. Looking around, the only good examples possibly without rust within 200 miles are a Sahara and a Sport that have been used as summer beach house vehicles and garaged the rest of the time. Am I doing myself a disservice by not looking at the 42RLE versions?

I realize I am asking the wrong crew whether a JK or newer generation would be a good idea, but short of getting one with a warranty, I feel like I am pigeonholing myself.

Any help, scorn or other responses appreciated!

Also, and sorry for the serial posts, I should mention that since the lady does not want to row her own gears, I am really limited in that I cannot entertain manual transmissions. And she apparently finds the LJ versions of the TJ strange looking, as she likes the shorter wheelbase. Thanks again for your thoughts.

In my opinion 05 -06 Jeep TJ and TJU's have additional issues to address. You could look at 03 -04 models with the 42 auto and drive it with the over drive switched off. Rust in the frame is a huge potential issue for all TJ's and more so with the beach driven units. I hope your search goes well for you guys.

If you’re not going to be doing any heavy modifications and are just looking for an occasional cruiser, the 42RLE is no issue. Toss in a new PCM from @Wranglerfix and run it. I have 220,000 hard miles on mine and it’s still running. The only issue I had was a PCM (that I replaced with the wranglerfix) and I had to fix the wiring harness that some noob messed up during repairs during previous ownership.

Fair, and I am looking as far as Arizona. Yes, I worry about the salt-spray and corrosion, even if they were driven primarily in towns as runabouts.

I realize now that I am essentially going to be looking anywhere in the United States, which is a new breadth of market for me!

I've owned my 06 with the 42RLE auto for 8 years. 57k on the odo when I bought it, 97k now. My PCM did go bad at ~72k, but that was easily fixed with a new WranglerFix PCM. Aside from that, I've had no issues and it's performed flawlessly as an around town weekend runabout, desert wheeler and back country hunting rig. Expand your search to the southwest, and look for a rust-free, well-maintained, stock (or close to it) TJ.

Might also do some reading up on the 0331 head. Likely all fixed by now but like you im kinda looking for a 97-99TJ and have seen more than my share of crap vehicles. If its not the rust, its the "upgrades" if you can call them that. More like hack jobs from a 16 year old. Keep looking, one will come around. When there is currently 200+ wranglers for sale on F/B within 100 miles of me alone it shouldn't be to hard to find one.

200 miles may be too small of a radius. When I was looking for my LJ I started with that distance and could not find what I wanted. I lived in Southern California at the time so I started looking for jeeps near enough to fly to and drive back. I found one in phoenix flew out bought it and got back home in the evening. My wife dropped me at the airport in the morning and went to work, I was home before she was with a new jeep. 6 hour drive.

Beach vehicles will depend on if they are from somewhere you can drive on the beach, or if they just lived/ were driven near the beach. Additionally, some may show low miles but still have been towed 100s of thousands of miles behind a motorhome.

I realize you're new here, but if your wife looks anything like Catherine Bach did back then, I hope you don't mind if we all hate you a little... :D

I'll do that. I am not feeling particularly optimistic at the moment, but luckily this is far from a necessity. But once I have something like this in my head...

The upgrades are indeed usually ruinous, and mostly tasteless, and definitely make it harder to buy. I am the guy who loves keeping things pretty stock. I have not been trolling FB Marketplace as for some reason that seems like a strange place to buy a car — but I'll definitely explore.

If only it could be this easy. Being in the northeast means I am far enough away from any relatively rust-free vehicle that it would not be a day trip! I am not above putting something on a truck, either, and having it delivered. If it is the right one.

Agreed. My sense is that roundabout Newport RI and East Hampton, NY we are talking more about "town Jeeps" that are garaged most of the year. That is my hope anyway. So, towing behind a motorhome will not advance the odometer?

Man, I forgot that she wore hose with her eponymous shorts. Catherine Bach was something in her day. But you can hate me a little; she is, by trade, a rare combination burlesque dancer, personal trainer and bikini bodybuilder (competing this weekend in the state grand prix). I'll ask if I can publicize her IG. She also does weddings and bar mitzvahs.

(No, but seriously, although she does do special events, she is one of NYC-area's best on the burlesque scene. I'm obviously proud of her. And thus want to buy her a Jeep we can work-on together!)

It does not, as flat towing is done with the transfer case in neutral, trans in park, and the key off with column unlocked.

Simpler exhaust system with only one cat on the 97 to 99s.

+1

Also 2000-2001 had a crack prone cylinder head that was fixed in later years. With that said, I owned two 2000 model year Jeep Cherokee XJs with the 4.0L. Neither of them the cylinder head cracked on, and one I owned for over 10 years and 150k miles. I did help a friend swap the cylinder head on his 2001 Cherokee and it was honestly a weekend job with hand tools. I wouldn't exclude a 2000 or 2001 out of my search if it had a clean frame.
