Adding a cabin filter on my 97 TJ

Got one of these in the mail today. Installed it with some silicone. Once the silicone cures I will pull the screws and install the top cover. So far, I like it!

That is from the same seller that I got mine from. Mine has held up really well. A good deal to keep some of that dust out.

Lemme ask what is probably a stupid question... is there any benefit to this if you mostly ride around in bikini mode with half doors? I.e., the Jeep will never be fully closed up?

Would someone please post what the filter part number is and where we can buy it? I am thinking I am going to go the 3D print route.

Thx, Scott

Nothing a simple screen wouldn't do (to keep out debris as mentioned above). Less flow restriction that way too.

Hey Y'all, I just wanted to share the cabin filter I added to my 1997. I bought this thing with a bad heater core and changed it recently. When I took the hvac box apart I noticed a few things. Firstly on the 1997 the fresh air intake under the cowl is wide open and doesn't have the cover like the later ones do. Secondly the duct between that intake and the heater box is only sealed with some loose foam strip. Mine was very loose and the foam was all flat. Thirdly the ac evaporator had all kinds of garbage in the front. I also noticed that water has been entering from the cowl intake and down under the carpet causing the floor to rust. I had previously worked on a cabin filter box for my LJ, but it hasn't been a priority. I decided to finish the box and install it on the '97 to prevent trash from entering the duct system and to help keep water from freely entering the cabin. The cabin filter I used is from a Jeep Liberty and it uses two parts. I only used one part. The box base is solid and should prevent most water from getting into the duct until it's almost an inch deep. The filter does restrict the flow slightly, but I think the filtration is worth the reduction in flow. I did have to heat and massage the top slightly to get the cowl to fit back on flat. Mostly on the far outside and some in the center. I could change this in the design, but I don't care that much and don't plan to sell these or anything. I also had to cut off the part of the duct that sticks out above the cowl floor. I silicone the bottom of the filter housing to the cowl floor and screwed it down. So far it has passed the garden hose test, and hopefully it will keep most of the dust and tree bits out.

Thanks for the design and sharing the files. My grandson printed one and I’m ready to install now. What’s the chances you have a part number or a link to that filter you used?
Thanks again.

How cool is it that we can so easily share our design ideas and product with each other using this technology. Can’t do that with most of the fab work we all do.

Nice, the print looks good. The filter I bought was a Bosch P3933WS. I got it from Rockauto for like $6. It comes with 2 filters so ya get a spare. There are probably better brands if you want to spend the $$. I think the fitment is 2010 Liberty iirc.

At the risk of being hit pretty hard with the dumbstick, I am struggling mightily to understand the Fram & Bosch part numbers referenced for the 3D print base. I measured the opening in the base and the length is 7.2" and width is 3.7" (converted from metric) and those dimensions don't match either filter so is everyone just cutting them to final size or is there something I am missing?

- Fram size image from their website included
- Bosch size found from amazon website: 8.27 x 8.27 x 1.3 inches

I know I asked a couple people privately the same question but don't want to keep bugging you guys so I thought I would post to the entire group.

I think that that is a generic picture and overall combined measurements. The filter has 2 separate pieces. 1 of which will fit perfectly.

I think the newer Jeeps can use either a two piece filter side by side, or a single filter that is wide enough to equal 2 of the smaller filters. Both will work on newer Jeeps but you need the two piece to work with this mod

Side note-

If you are an olympic-level gymnast, you can replace the filter by dropping the fan motor and going at it through there vs removing the cowl panel.

Upon further review, I did some additional research on filter part numbers and wanted to share what I found.

For reference, I have an '04 so I used the '05 base file Jezza had previously posted.

Previous part numbers listed for use are:
- Fram: CF11777
- Bosch: P3933WS

The Fram filter does not fit but the Bosch does. The Bosch number does come with 2 separate filters as mentioned before so you have an extra when it comes time to change. I also cross referenced the Bosch part fitment details and found the filter was originally used on a 2008-12 Liberty (plus additional vehicles but just focused on the Liberty). I went back to the Fram website and found part number CF10747 is their version and ordered it to trial. It does fit as well and also comes with 2 filters. I decided to go with the Fram as it looks like a better filter but it does cost like twice as much though.

I have also included images below showing the fitment of the 3 filters I trialed.
