Had to play that for a coworker that smokes and happens to drive a Chevy.
Democracy can be a bitch sometimes. They will call a vote to raise the price of cigarettes. Since there are more non-smokers (and support for non-smokers), the vote passes every time.
I remember when my dad smoked that he bitched when the price rose to 40 cents a pack. This would've been about '67 or '68, I'm thinking. He gave up the habit long before they hit a buck a pack.
I used to chew snuff about that same time frame. I think it was $0.19 per can when I started. Chewing tobacco was exempt from most to the taxes placed on cigarettes.
I remember buying model car kits in my youth for around $3 per kit (early '70s). Last weekend I saw some with prices ranging from $35-$50. Back in the day, I would save my allowance money (from mowing the yard, and such...no freebies!) and buy the kits. It helped keep me out of trouble. I can't imagine a 10-year-old trying to save $50 for a damn model these days...

Yes! Bent a little heat shield/spoiler for downforce and the downforce/speed combo made the rubber tires spit off the plastic wheels!
The tyranny of the majority is certainly a thing. I'm not sure I approve of "sin taxes" myself (pretty sure I don't, actually). BUT, since tax dollars do pay for management of the majority of health consequences of smoking (cancer, COPD, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, post-op infections...) through either medicare or medicaid, there is a persuasive argument to be made for cigarette taxes.
Well just wait until California teaches your state that taxes solve all problems too!!
