A couple electrical head scratchers…

Good evening all, I have two issues that I’d appreciate any help with. My Jeep is a 2002 Sahara 4.0, auto. I am new to Jeeps and while I get by, I am no mechanic or electrician.

1. Horn - Since I bought it a few months back the horn has always worked just fine. I went out of town on a trip and when I got back, no horn. First step was to check fuses. Yep, the horn fuse was blown. Changed that but still no horn. No, it didn’t blow again. Swapped out the relay but no joy. Looked at the wiring but see no issues, so now I don’t know where to go from here… Any suggestions?

2. Fog Lights - When I bought the Jeep the fog lights did not come on. The seller stated that they haven’t worked since the headlights were swapped out for LEDs. One was also damaged so I replaced them both with new OEM MOPAR fog lights. No luck. Both the fuse in position 19 in the box in front of the battery and the relays in position 35 are fine. If I jump to the fog lights they come on so they do work. Are there any other relays? The wiring diagram indicates relays 1 & 2 but I think that is the pair in position 35? A friend more skilled than I made these notes: “Fog lamp relay number one has no power at pin three. Putting power on pin 5 lights the fog lights. Pin one does not toggle with power from the fog lamp switch. Power for the fog lamp switch comes from fog lamp relay number 2, pin four.” So should I be looking for another relay elsewhere that should supply power to the switch?

I have brought the Jeep down to Belize, where I now live, so I no longer have the resources that I had in Florida. Again, any suggestions would be welcome!

Unplug the horn and directly apply voltage and see if it sounds off.

And have someone hold the horn button down and see if you have voltage.

I'm wondering if it's your clock spring in the steering wheel.

As to the fog lights I'd pull the center part out of the dash and visually inspect the wiring and test the dash switch.

Mac, thanks. If the horn issue is because of a problem with the clock spring, wouldn’t there also be other issues such as the airbag? I don’t have any alarm codes or check engine light showing…

The place to look at the fog light wiring is behind the center section of the dash? I’ll try to get into that today. The two events may not be related but based on the seller’s comment, is there anything about installing LED headlights that might cause the fog lights to not come on? Or cause the installer to disconnect them?

Thanks, Matt

Where is your fog light switch?

Have you looked at the factory service manuals located in the resources section...8w for wiring diagrams.

Agreed on the clock spring...other stuff should, could be going wrong...also could be one broken trace...but Occam's Razor...

I'd at least check the switch on the steering wheel column (after checking the horn itself.)

Fog light switch is the standard pull out of the headlight control arm. It is all stock.

Yes, we looked at the wiring diagrams for the fog lights but but were left unsure about the relays. They reference relays #1 and #2 but not clear if that means the relays in position 35 in the main fuse box or if there is another relays somewhere that we haven’t been able to find. I was hoping someone could tell me based on experience if there is another location. I’ve looked at the firewall and driver side of the engine compartment but didn’t see anything.
