4WD not working (locker bypass)

2006 jeep wrangler rubicon...my 4wd isnt working, therefore my 4wd indicator light isnt lighting up . when i did the little key test, the 4wd indicator did light up. am i correct in assuming that it has to be the actual 4wd not engaging? also, im just guessing that the next step would be to replace the 4wd switch (which someone told me is actually the transfer case switch bc my transfer case is nv241)? however, im considering doing the locker switch bypass, which leads me to.........IF I DO THE BYPASS, DOES THIS MEAN THAT I WOULD NO LONGER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE 4WF INDICATOR OR SWITCH???? probably all silly questions to most but any advice would be soooo very welcome,

Jack the jeep off the ground so all 4 wheels can rotate freely. Then test if 4WD works. If it does, then it's most likely the switch on the TC. And I don't understand what you mean by if you do the locker bypass you won't have to worry about the 4WD switch. Apples and oranges. There is a switch and light for 4WD, and switches and lights for rear locker and front locker.

Are you putting the transfer case in 4 low? Lockers only work in 4 low.

He never said his lockers or his locker indicator lights didn't work. Only the 4WD light.
Also, with a locker bypass the lockers can work in 4Hi, 4Lo, and 2WD

Thanks for the advice. And, no I havent even checked the lockers yet bc i kno that they 4wd has to b working first. Well, atleast I think i know...

As mentioned, you need to determine if the 4wd (front axle) is being engaged when the transfer case lever is shifted.
If not, check/adjust linkage.
If so, it's probably the 4wd switch at the transfer case.

First thing is unplug the switch and jump it with a paperclip and see if the dash lights up-

Also all parts store switches are hit or miss. Just a heads up.

I thought it had multiple positions to produce varying resistance.

It does, but when you jump the connector the switch is out of play- goal is to see if it lights up when you jump the connector- if so the switch is not working properly to allow current to pass.
