Hi folks, my jeep wont shift up out of 1st gear while driving.
It's an 05 automatic TJ X.
The lever works to set it in Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive.
However, while driving it stays in 1st gear and wont shift up to 2nd.
I've tried manually setting 2nd.
The transmission fluid looks clean and full on the dipstick.
It doesn't have a history of transmission problems.
There are a few other things that went downhill around the same time. I don't think they're related, but you never know..
The speedometer started jumping around occasionally registering no speed.. I assume this is the speedo-gear (replaced a few times over the years for different tires) - but I haven't looked yet so I'm not sure. The speedometer behaved like this for a few months and was getting worse but the Jeep shifted normally throughout (it stopped shifting suddenly).
The alarm came on a few nights ago with no apparent cause.. I couldn't get it to shut off via remote, so I put the key in and turned it which shut the alarm off - but the Jeep didn't start.
So now the battery appears dead. The battery is a little over 2 years old and the Jeep had sat for a few weeks (due to shifting issue), so I tried jumping it. It made clicking noises but didn't turn over. I banged on the starter with no change. The battery shouldn't be weak only being 2 years old and a jump should of allowed it to crank - so I may have another issue there. I've read about running a heavy-gauge wire from the battery's negative to the alternator's ground to bypass a sensor that may be stuck (need to read more about it) and about trying to start it in Neutral - or I may just have a bum battery.
Either way, once the battery's fixed I'll be right back to the shifting issue..
Side note: I have general tools (no specialty tools of any kind), and am very budget restricted currently.
When it rains, it pours.. So I'm needing the least expensive / easiest things to try first!
Thanks all!
